If you're interested in what I do for a living, one of my coworkers is giving a webinar on some safety-related software I designed the UI for. Registration is free here: http://bit.ly/2ddO6CM

Fair warning - this is not glitzy consumer product; it's engineering software designed for users who want to do stuff like keep chemical plants and refineries running safely.

It's a cool project in that the underlying technology is old (can you say FORTRAN, kids?) and very well-respected, backed up by experimental data. But in all those years it's never had a UI. So my challenge was to create something that would showcase the power and accuracy of the tool for a sophisticated user base. #UX - it's not just for websites

Dear friends,

Were you aware that Google may be sharing your home addresses conveniently marked on its maps? I was not.

I recently brought up a Google map of Cambridge on my mobile and was startled to see markers with the names and locations of many friends. My guess is that you have set a home address in maps, as it keeps asking me to do.

The other possibility is that it's mining the contact info on my mobile. I'm not sure which option I find more creepy. In either case I had not noticed this behavior before and thought I'd mention it.

I'd go with annoying instead of creepy, but I do wish they had mentioned the feature and that it had a simple "no, thanks" button instead of having to grind through hundreds of contacts so my map isn't full of little yellow stars.

It was a pretty stupid design and deployment decision, though, whether it is desirable or not.

+Peter da Silva there are indeed many more of them. But they are also (if my experience interacting with them is a guide) louder, ruder, generally younger and less caring of the people and environment around them. I've been at Ingress anomalies, which pack many thousands of players into a relatively few square miles, and I haven't seen this sort of lack of caring there.

Someone does not care if I drive up even close. Didn't get out of the car, though.

If you had any doubts at all (and I suspect none of my readers did).

I'm told that the Canadian government has set up matching funds with the Red Cross so if you're inclined to help from afar a donation to the R.C. seems like a good way to go.

I don't think any of these ideas are exceptionally novel, but it's a great list of real actions that individuals and organizations can take to improve diverse recruiting and retention.

I particularly like that she calls out "culture fit", which I see as code for "more like me" and when "me" is yet another white guy that is anti-diversity.

"Culture fit" is also used as a polite way of saying "this person has personal or emotional issues that would actively impede the work this company is trying to accomplish".

I know I have some photo friends who might want to enter this (+Allison Feldhusen +Mark Donnelly +Matthew Ringel +Terry Holt +Johanna Bobrow  ).

Full disclosure: this is a pyramid promo - if anyone enters via that URL it gives me +1 chance of winning the giveaway. I've been a 5-Day-Deal subscriber for a few months now and their mails are infrequent and they have not sold my email address. YMMV, of course.
More than $500 in prizes to be won! Win the award winning Everyday Messenger Bag, a CapturePRO camera clip, the Slide camera strap, the Shell camera cover or the Field Pouch from 5DayDeal in collaboration with our friends at Peak Design.

Continuing my heuristic that "Nothing in #ingress  takes less than two hours" I figured I'd drop my kid off, run an errand, pick up a couple portals on the way and be home.

Two hours later I'm home because I got hungry. On the other hand, I'm up to 329 UPV, 154 UPC for the week...

Having (inadvertently) gotten into an argument with no less than the estimable +Ed Chi I thought I'd just leave this here for your perusal.

Some choice quotes:

"Fed up with the experience of cluttered, slow-loading pages, almost a quarter of a billion people are turning to ad blockers. [...] Ad blockers create a faster, cleaner, albeit unsanctioned user experience that also prevents a user's data from being sold to a multitude of companies they have never heard of.

"Confronted with the Sisyphean task of improving their own user experience, media companies are instead doing what the music and movie industry did when confronted with a superior unsanctioned user experience: They are responding with legal threats and attempts to make the unsanctioned user experience worse.

"[A]t a time when a user’s relationship with a brand is becoming paramount, media companies are effectively going to war with their own audience to make their user experience worse. This is not good."
What publishers can and can't do — and how that forces them into giving up more of their core competencies to Facebook.

That model assumes that I'm deliberately visiting the bad experience Web sites. Usually I'm not. I'm following a link that is - more often than not - hidden behind either some link text or a shortened URL. I do not, as a matter of preference, go to wired.com, nor follow links that clearly lead there. Nonetheless I find myself looking at a page from that site several times a month.

I lived in the city when this happened. Smoke from the fires was visible from my bedroom window.

+Carolyn Priest-Dorman The saddest part, imo, is that this was the culmination of a string of injustices inflicted on that part of the city. The residents had been begging the city for MONTHS to do something about MOVE before the situation escalated. MOVE members were harassing neighborhood schoolkids on the way to/from the bus, etc. Yet another example of a community of color that was simultaneously over-policed and under-protected. Another Rizzo legacy.

Anyone understand Google/Gmail behavior? I've got two up-to-date Chrome browsers on two different machines that behave differently when I log into my gmail.

Specifically, the home browser refuses to show inline images in emails. Open the same mail on the work browser and images appear just fine. In both cases I have my options set to "Show Images."

WTF?

Thanks, I'll stick with whitelisting and Patreon and direct contributions. A flat $7/month for unknown benefits and uncertain impact on the creators I want to support isn't my cuppa.
