On our blog: A Local Guide to the De Pijp District

Did you know in the 19th century, De Pijp (the Pijp) neighborhood was supposed to become a new center of Amsterdam, with a brand new railway station on the current location of Sarphatipark? But instead of luxurious villas and large avenues, the Pijp became famous for its exotic restaurants, vibrant bars and the biggest street market in the city. If you visit Amsterdam, don’t stick to the crowded center of the city, and instead give the Pijp a chance to enchant you!

My wife and I took the walking tour with Anna-Marie. She is absolutely phenomenal! Everywhere she took us to sample local fare was outstanding. She also provided cultural and historical context to everything. This was by far the best thing we did in Amsterdam and would recommend to anyone visiting the city. Thank you Anna-Marie!

Luckily I had found out about the pilot 'tour' Eating Amsterdam Food Tour was doing. This is an open tour, not a private one which made it more fun meeting new people. Being Dutch I expected the stereotypical food. Of course you get the true Dutch highlights as cheese and herring, but there is way more, even some unexpected. They also give you a lot of background and fun facts about the food and the city of Amsterdam. All in all this tour gives a good overview of what the Dutch cuisine has to offer. Our guide is very enthusiastic and the half day delivered way more than advertised and more than expected. It's a great way to see the best part of the city, learn some fun stuff and most importantly taste great foods and have fun! Especially because the team has picked the best suppliers for the food. No soft bitterballen or lean herring: only the best will do. And being Dutch, I can tell a good bitterball from a bad one! I had a great time and would easily do it again. Which I probably will next time someone from abroad comes over: this will be definitely on the to do list!
