I swam with these robots for this story. (Or, did I write the story just so I could swim with these robots?)

Wrote this feature on sharks and shark tags for Popsci based on a trip I took last year. Special thanks to Thayer Walker and Summit series, Waitt, Bamboo sushi, Nature conservancy who got lost in the edit process. I ended up filing 9k, but was cut to 5k.

I could not be more confused at why this base is being shut down. Decisions like this are probably why we are declining in science as a nation. tell your friends--the aquarius research base is an astounding tool for man to observe the ocean from. We deserve to have it, as a nation of thinking, curious, people who are hungry to understand our natural world and the universe in general.
You can see it from the surface of the water: a blue outline 50 feet down. Aquarius. The last undersea base. Diving down to it is like falling slowly into another world. I wish I could live there.

I agree - with the amount of money we spend on defense, I have a hard time believing they (the government) can't find a way to fund a single small lab.  Particularly when it is already there and functional.  Kind of reminds me of the ISS and how the plan was to just let it die in 2015 (think funding got extended for that now).  We're what, 25th in the world for science education now?

Great read though Brian, here's to hoping they find funding.

wrote this for the NY Times. You will soon be able to buy your own ROV for $750, capable to 300 feet of depth.
A mini-submarine made with cheap plastic parts and readily available electronics could change underwater exploration by making an inexpensive device available to a larger number of explorers and resea...
