Missed this Ezra Klein piece the first time around - what we're still missing about Hillary Clinton after decades in the media spotlight.

"The obsession with communication — presidential talking and messaging — is a dangerous mirage of the media age."

The collaboration and work habits of the likely next American president are profoundly important, and don't get enough attention (or respect?) in elections. Having found Sanders more impressive in the primary campaign, this article has me rethinking my values a bit.
Why we keep missing Hillary Clinton’s greatest strength.

The Witness is finally out, and it's fantastic. It makes me feel like I'm back in the public library playing Myst...
Definitely worth full price on steam, unless you hate puzzles.

Well damn, this actually sounds pretty good.
I am proposing the FCC use its Title II authority to implement and enforce open internet protections, banning paid prioritization, and the blocking and throttling of lawful content and services.

It's not uncommon for the metagame to be more interesting, but this is totally bizarre:

http://www.slate.com/articles/sports/sports_nut/2014/11/sam_hinkie_is_the_philadelphia_76ers_lose_on_purpose_approach_to_team_building.html

This stuff sucks for people who just want to watch the sport though. I mostly follow southern-hemisphere rugby, which is fortunately further behind on the path from provincial teams to euro-soccer-style international franchises.
Sometime during the last 18 months, the Philadelphia 76ers ceased being a basketball team and became an avant-garde, vaguely basketball-ish idea. It might have happened in June 2013, when the Sixers traded All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday for a draft pick they used on promising but injured center Nerlens Noel,...

What better celebration of the UK's new laws protecting parodies?

Left a dish soaking as the washing machine was running - standing waves!

Finally had a use for the slow motion camera on the Nexus 6P.

I'm used to the disappointment of traditional-media-meets-internet-meets-international-audience, and wasn't expecting to see much of this year's Rugby World Cup live.

Pleasantly surprised that +Eurosport picked it up in Germany and have a straightforward streaming setup (web/mobile/chromecast). Maybe we're living in the future after all?

Yeah, four years ago it was impossible, and now it's both easier and cheaper than back home. Funny how that works...

The German ELSTER site (online tax declaration) is amazing.

I suppose it would be too easy to display the welcome message on the screen, once I've successfully signed up. Instead:

 - I'm notified that I have 1 new message
 - the message has "Status: 90", whatever that means
 - I'm offered the choice to view it as HTML or PDF
 - Clicking "HTML" takes me to a java applet which wants me to enter my PIN (again)
 - having done so, the applet downloads an HTML file containing the welcome message to my home directory

This has to be some kind of joke, right?

Additional info: The HTML-Messages are for accessibility reasons. Screenreaders have far less problems with HTML than with the PDF alternative (for those who are NOT blind).

Today's highlights:
 - discovering that anybody can buy pork belly

Lowlights:
 - Trying to use a leek to hold a hot dish still, when the accessible options were a leek or an oven mitt.
 - Trying to eat the pie while the pie is still hot.

A good day!

We had a great time at Aro'a Beachside. Amazing snorkelling at the beach just metres away, breakfasts with tasty fresh fruit, and the staff were really helpful with advice and arranging activities around the island. Highly recommended for a relaxing holiday.
