A solid group turned out in the early Prince George morning to celebrate United Nations Day.
After reading the proclamation, in a solemn moment, we all watched as the UN flag was raised at City Hall today, then lowered to half mast to honour slain Canadian military members Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and W.O. Patrice Vincent.
The Mystery of My City's Namesake
Post-humous, Morven, Caithness, Scotland: In the Highlands of Scotland, 72 years ago today, Queen Elizabeth’s uncle, the Duke of Kent became the first member of the Royal Family to die in wartime in 500 years.
As a man, he was called “incredibly gifted and artistic”, “courageous and never willing to give up on his friends”. In the Roaring 20s, he was the most scandalous member of British Royalty, using his “monumental charm” with women, liquor, men and drugs. As World War 2 intensified, he showed he was also ready to take on heroic tasks. He was on a secret mission when his plane crashed mysteriously 72 years ago today, on August 25, 1942.
The cause of the crash is a permanent mystery. In the name of military secrecy, the details of his death were classified for 50 years, but when details were sought, the files were gone, and the explanation for the events of that day had been lost.
Though he never visited Northern British Columbia, our Northern Capital was named for him. You can read about it (though the conclusion is uncertain) on the city website. The Duke of Kent’s other name was Prince George.
The movie “the Queen’s Lost Uncle” (link below) proposes our city’s namesake had been on a top secret mission to take a leadership role in the alliance with the United States when the plane went down.
It was productive.
Our election takes place Nov. 15, 2014.
