Thanks Su Ann and Mike! It's the last week of the election - no more signage to put out, but lots of events to attend. Really appreciate the supportive words!

As the election proceeds, a new friend asked me how experience I had in a scooter.  The led to several days where I was practicing (or walking dogs) from a wheelchair, and a good learning experience with a motorized scooter.

Good for you +Garth Frizzell! Nothing like walking in another's shoes or experiencing their scooter/wheelchair to get an understanding of what their lives are like!

Happy United Nations Day.

A solid group turned out in the early Prince George morning to celebrate United Nations Day.
After reading the proclamation, in a solemn moment, we all watched as the UN flag was raised at City Hall today, then lowered to half mast to honour slain Canadian military members Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and W.O. Patrice Vincent.

RIP: The Queen’s Lost Uncle

The Mystery of My City's Namesake

Post-humous, Morven, Caithness, Scotland: In the Highlands of Scotland, 72 years ago today, Queen Elizabeth’s uncle, the Duke of Kent became the first member of the Royal Family to die in wartime in 500 years.

As a man, he was called “incredibly gifted and artistic”, “courageous and never willing to give up on his friends”. In the Roaring 20s, he was the most scandalous member of British Royalty, using his “monumental charm” with women, liquor, men and drugs. As World War 2 intensified, he showed he was also ready to take on heroic tasks. He was on a secret mission when his plane crashed mysteriously 72 years ago today, on August 25, 1942.

The cause of the crash is a permanent mystery. In the name of military secrecy, the details of his death were classified for 50 years, but when details were sought, the files were gone, and the explanation for the events of that day had been lost.

Though he never visited Northern British Columbia, our Northern Capital was named for him. You can read about it (though the conclusion is uncertain) on the city website. The Duke of Kent’s other name was Prince George.

The movie “the Queen’s Lost Uncle” (link below) proposes our city’s namesake had been on a top secret mission to take a leadership role in the alliance with the United States when the plane went down.
Shown in 2005, this documentary talks about the life and death of Prince George, Duke of Kent.

Thanks for this, Garth.  Wonder how the decision was made to put Bertie on the throne instead of the real George.  So much that we will never know...  Did you see the movie, The King's Speech?  Very moving portrayal of Elizabeth's support during Bertie's courageous battle with stuttering.  Their old father was a lost soul.

I was recently re-elected as a City Councillor in Prince George BC.  I'm continuing on in my role on the Board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. In this role, I was part of a group that met with Canada's Minister of International Trade, Hon. Ed Fast.

It was productive.

Our city in Northern BC, Canada, is in the last two weeks of our local election.  Though I'm running for my third term, I'm also a voter, so I asked the two Mayoral candidates to outline their leadership style.

Thanks to the UNBC Political Science Students' Association for hosting an inventive format for their all-candidates meeting.  It was good to have a lot of one-on-one time with students and the public.  loved the format!
