Preventive Maintenance (PM) is the basis of TPM and it was started in 1951. Preventive Maintenance is the scheduled system of maintenance to prevent the losses and breakdown of the equipment. Corrective Maintenance (CM) is the system of maintenance to identify, isolate and rectify a fault so that failed equipment restored to an operating condition. Corrective maintenance introduced in 1957. Maintenance Prevention (PM) is the system of maintenance starts right from the design of the equipment and manufacturing process to achieve the zero maintenance condition and extends the life of the equipment. It was started in 1960. Now the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) includes all three; Preventive Maintenance (PM), Corrective Maintenance (CM) and Maintenance Prevention (MP) and it was started in 1971. NipponDenso now known as Denso was the first company that put TPM into practices.
