Awesome food. I tried salmon and few more and it was fine and amazing. Ambience little dated but may be fine for business outings. All 4 stars are for food only. You need to work on speeding up service for drinks, especially when there are 3 waiters around you and taking orders. Looked like little chaos as had to ask for my drink twice.

This restaurant is very much overpriced for what you get. I ordered NY Strip steak served with gnochi. The gnochi was 2 inches square and 1/2 in thick with 2 small slices of NY Strip served over it with oxtail broth and a couple of greens--hardly enough to be called a meal-- for $30. It was tasty, but was more appetizer size. The piped in music was not appropriate for a fine dining venue. The rum cake I had for dessert was also about 2" square and about 1/2 in thick with 5 small pieces of pineapple for $9.50.

Wonderful experience! The staff went out of their way to make the meal a birthday night to remember. Kristina was great! And I can't thank her enough. The mousse, the scallops, they were even better than she described. Easily the best scallops I have ever tasted. Dessert was delicious. Truly amazing all around!

Four Square is impeccable in their food, service, and experience. I have dined here over a dozen times and never had anything close to a bad experience. The food is really incredible, but on the pricey side.

I have visited Four Square Restaurant several times through the years and overall have had a pleasant experience. However, I booked a reservation for Christmas Eve (I booked this in October) for 7 people as my family was visiting from Chicago; and I wanted to provide a pleasant unique dining experience. We arrived and were placed at a table in the bar area next to the entry door; therefore, there was constant traffic around our table with people coming in and out and waiters going to the bar. Okay, I could live with that. However, we ordered drinks and then our meal and asked for a bottle of wine with the dinner. The wine came with the first course; okay, I can live with that. However, after 1 1/2 hours we had not received our entrees, nor had our amuse bouches come to the table, even though I could see other tables with diners who were seated after us receiving their entrees. I finally got the waitress's attention; she said the chef had not heard her call out our orders, and the entrees were not ready. Needless to say, the wine was long gone, and I was very disappointed in our experience and completely lost my appetite. They then rushed out the amuse bouches; said our entrees were being plated by the chef and should arrive shortly. I had no appetite for any of the food at that point; this was my family's Christmas Eve dinner, and it was a complete disaster. No one apologized; no one offered us a complimentary bottle of wine, a complimentary dessert and coffee for the 2 hour wait for our food. I considered this very unprofessional on their part. I tried to get the hostess' attention to ask for the manager several times, but I felt that was ignored. When they came with the dessert menus, I just asked for the check; nothing was offered in the form of any type of apology for this poor dining experience. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Four Square. I had hoped this would become our Christmas Eve tradition; sadly it will not.

Simply our favorite restaurant in the area. Shane Ingram may not get the publicity of some of the other chefs in the area, but this has been consitently one of the finest restaurants in Durham for many years. Set in a historic home in Durham, dining occurs in several rooms in the house. There are typically 4 or 5 tables in each room, The decor is upscale and generally intimate. Our service has been been consistently good. The manager Brandon has a good knowledge of the wines. Shane varies the menu about every two months. Keep an eye out for special events such as their tomato or lamb events. We have rarely had a meal there that was not excellent. Highly recommended.

The food is excellent. Some of the pairings on a dish are questionable but that could be my limited pallete showing through. Everything is expertly prepared. Super expensive, so much so that it's out of balance in my opinion (on my budget that is). The place is beautiful but the surrounding location is shadeville USA. Parking is terrible.
