WWI Artefacts Discovered In Old Erskine Hospital

Here’s something sure to be of interest to those seeking jobs after the army – a collection of documents and other artefacts dating back to the first world war have been discovered in a locked room and beneath the floorboards in a disused part of Erskine Hospital.

The hospital was first opened in October 1916, then known as The Princess Louise Scottish Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers, according to the Daily Record.

Included in the newly discovered collection were woodworking tools that some of the recovering soldiers who came to the hospital used to make artificial limbs for wartime amputees coming home from the war.

The University of Glasgow has now joined forces with veteran charity Erskine to catalogue the information and artefacts they’ve discovered to come up with a database of all soldiers who were admitted and later discharged.

“There are boxes upon boxes of wartime history which will shine a light on so many personal stories of bravery and endurance during the first world war, but also the incredible advancement in the treatment of injured personnel not just physically but mentally since 1916,” senior lecturer in history at the University of Glasgow Dr Tony Pollard was quoted as saying.

If you are currently looking for work having recently left the Armed Forces, make sure you get in touch with us here at ForceSelect to find out how we can help. We have a very experienced recruitment team behind us, as well as former service personnel, to help provide both employers and jobseekers with the understanding and guidance they need.
