Purim in July. Dvar Torah Tetzaveh Zachor 5775. By Rabbi Shira Shazeer. This Shabbat, I offered some words on the parsha, the weekly Torah reading, which a number of people have asked me to share. Here, more or less, is what I said. First, a few preliminary thoughts that I offered earlier in the ...

Pesach - Celebrating Freedom - Freeing up the Celebration
The countdown has begun!  Passover is coming and there's so much to do to get ready - cleaning the house, planning the menu, cooking, figuring out the guest list, and oh, yeah, planning an awesome seder for this year. Pesach is, by far, the most demanding h...

Purim - Upside Down Identity
Purim has been - at different times in my life - my favorite and my least favorite Jewish holiday.  Maybe it ought to be.  After all, it is the upside-down holiday - the day when what we think we know is turned on its head.  It's a day when we trade in the ...

When Sharon was in nursery school, she dressed up as Haman for Purim.  When she was all dressed, she looked in the mirror, was, evidently, pleased with what she saw, then she turned around and gave me a ZETS!  I had a hard time not laughing, but I told her that just because she was dressed like Haman she wasn't allowed to hit me!

Yom Kippur is coming and there's not a lot to do at home - no festive meal, no fun family ritual, barely even any songs to sing.  Traditionally, this is the day to spend all day at synagogue in reflective prayer.  Of course w...

Professional Juggler: Mom, Rabbi, Teacher, Childbirth Educator, Accordionist, etc. etc.
Introduction
A professional juggler, though throwing and catching aren't my strongest suits, my life is busy and full.
I have three wonderful boys Zalmen, 6, Velvel, 4, and Betsalel, born this September, together with my lovely and talented husband, Cantor Ken Richmond.
By day, I'm a teacher of Judaic Studies and Music at Metrowest Jewish Day School.
Some evenings you'll find me teaching childbirth classes called A Time to Birth Childbirth Education with a Jewish twist through my organization The Jewish Birth Network
And on Shabbat or Holidays, I might be facilitating young family services at Temple Israel of Natick.
When I get a chance, I love playing accordion and singing, mostly klezmer music and Yiddish songs.
