If You’re Thinking of Having a Cosmetic Treatment, Do Your Research First

Dr Eddie Roos, Medical Director of Cosmetic Elegance Clinic, is saddened by the death of Jean Huang on Friday 1 September. Ms Huang suffered a cardiac arrest during a treatment at a Sydney beauty clinic and died a few days later. Although this incident is tragic, it also should not have happened.

For some time there have been calls from Cosmetic Physicians and Colleges throughout Australia to have more regulation in this industry. Considering the amount of people who have cosmetic medical treatments in regular beauty salons each day, we are likely to see more accidents of this nature occurring. How many more people have to die unnecessarily before something is done?

There are risks with cosmetic treatments. That is why they are classified as medical procedures; and they can only be safely carried out in the hands of trained medical professionals. Dr Eddie Roos says, “We want people to know how important it is to have cosmetic medical treatments at a medical clinic performed by trained, registered medical professionals, and under medical supervision. Cheap options can cost you your health or even your life.”

He appeals to everyone to do their research before having a cosmetic medical treatment so that they can make good, informed choices. "We encourage all Australians to seek the advice of a qualified medical professional when considering undergoing a medical procedure or taking medication."

Dr Roos emphasises the importance of asking questions such as, “What is the emergency response protocol of the beauty salon or skin clinic that will treat you? Is there a registered doctor on site who will oversee the treatment?”

The cosmetic medicine industry is growing rapidly with more people than ever before turning to non-invasive or minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedures to achieve optimum skin health. What we need to be aware of is that not every salon or clinic that opens its doors adheres to the regulations and standards required to perform these cosmetic treatments safely. Before having a cosmetic treatment check the credentials of the clinic and whether they are affiliated with the cosmetic medicine colleges such as The Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia (CPCA), the Australasian College of Aesthetic Medicine (ACAM) and the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS).

Woman’s visit to nail salon leads to sinister discovery

A casual visit to the beauty salon proved life-changing for one woman after a staff member identified a rare type of cancer on her fingernail.

Jean Skinner, from Uckfield in the UK, had a walk-in nail client a couple of weeks ago who had a dark vertical stripe on her nail. When she sat down she said she needed a nail polish dark enough to cover the mark.

“I did not want to frighten her but I told her she needed to see her doctor immediately!” It turns out that the nail beautician’s instincts were right. “She called me today to tell me that yes it was a very aggressive melanoma that has already spread to her lymph nodes! Her prognosis is not good!”

Bride-to-be Samantha Holder also learned she had subungual melanoma after a visit to Cosmetic Elegance Clinic in Toowoomba, Queensland for a little facial “freshen up” in the lead-up to her big day. Physician and skin cancer expert Dr Eddie Roos noticed an unusual blemish under the nail of her left index finger. “The first thing he noticed was my index finger nail with the brown streak through it,” she told The Chronicle at the time.

“I had a biopsy and one week later he confirmed it was a rare nail bed cancer. Another week later they took it off. It is a very aggressive melanoma that can quickly turn into lymphoma cancer.”

Samantha had an operation locally to remove the tip and first knuckle of her index finger.
