A talk at the LinuxWochen conference.
During the +15 years of development, there have been many challenges for the RTS game 0 A.D. Seven years ago, the project's closed-source development stagnated. Now, the open-source reincarnation of the project is reaching beta stage.
In this presentation we'll give an insight into how the game is developed, what problems there have been and how we overcame them. We'll give you a thorough look under the hood at the game engine and you'll find out how we optimized the pathfinder, and how the multiplayer component works.
If you are interested in large open-source projects, game development, or if are you developing an open-source game yourself, this talk is for you.

During and after the talk we welcome any questions you may have. Questions can be asked in German.

I returned to 0AD after some time. Awesome stuff! The first thing I noticed was the excellent menu music. Nice music in general, too.

We're currently upgrading the forums, and until that is finished they will be offline. It's taking a bit longer than we anticipated, but we will let you know as soon as it's finished. In the mean time you can still use the Wiki/bug tracker ( http://trac.wildfiregames.com/ ), web site ( http://play0ad.com ) and chat with us: http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=0ad

0 A.D. is mainly oriented towards older players, but as this article shows it can interest younger players as well (in German, and the part about 0 A.D. comes towards the end).

A couple of photos from the first days at LinuxWochen in Vienna. If you are in or near Vienna we'll be there, and hold two talks (see the events for more information), tomorrow as well.

A talk at the LinuxWochen conference. For people new to or already familiar with the most awesome open-source RTS game around. We'll talk about what 0 A.D. is, how it came to be and why open-source games are important.

You'll learn about how the project almost died when it was in closed-source development, yet flourishes since going open-source. Also, we'll give you a sneak preview for upcoming features and ways you can contribute to the game. You'll get a behind the scenes look at how art, maps and mods are developed.

If you're interested in open-source development, computer games, or if you'd like to contribute to an awesome project like 0 A.D, but don't know where to start, this talk is for you.

During and after the talk we welcome any questions you may have. Questions can be asked in German.

For more info and to be able to see a schedule of all the talks they offer, please see https://cfp.linuxwochen.at/de/LWW16/public/events/423
