The BBC reported June 18 that a coalition of largely Euroskeptic opposition parties led by Liberal Party leader Lars Lokke Rasmussen defeated incumbent Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt in a general election. Denmark is known for its high voter participation. An estimated 85.8% of the population turned out to vote.

The suspected shooter, Dylann Roof, will return to South Carolina to face charges "soon", according to police in North Carolina, where Roof was arrested June 18. A few hours after his arrest, Roof waived extradition in a closed hearing, an attorney said. Details of the attack have emerged, including Roof's alleged statement to victims, telling them, "You have to go" before opening fire.

In a June 18 statement, Samsung said it will address a security flaw affecting Galaxy devices, promising "security police updates will begin rolling out in the next few days". Samsung was first informed of the issue in Nov. 2014, U.S. cybersecurity firm NowSecure said.

A fire heavily damaged a Catholic church on the Sea of Galilee on June 18. A passage from a Jewish prayer was painted on a wall outside the church. Investigators believe the fire was set deliberately. The church is where Christians believe Jesus performed the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fish.

A New York federal appeals court on June 17 reversed a decision that top Justice Dept. officials were not liable for abuse and prolonged detention of immigrants, most of them Muslim, after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The plaintiffs say they faced beatings, humiliating searches and other abuse in a Brooklyn detention center.
