A red figure pottery hydria depicting the goddess Demeter seated and receiving her daughter Persephone holding torches on her return from Hades. On either side of the mother and daughter are two female musicians playing an aulos and a drum.

The myth of Persephone's return to her mother from the Underworld was central to the Eleusinian Mysteries, celebrated every year and connected with the initiation of Athenian women as well as agrarian fertility.

Greek, Athens, 4th Century BC

The handles, rim and foot have been repaired with small patches of infill, the main body of the vase is intact

Size: 28 x 17 cms including handles

Ex. private collection, Sussex, UK; acquired before 1956.

A pottery pithos jar with a slender flared foot, three handles on the shoulder and a wide mouth. The body is painted with bands and a trellis pattern around the shoulder.

Greek, Mycenaean, 14th Century BC

Two handles repaired, some large surface chips to the body as can be seen in the photographs (one has been filled).

Size: 14.3 x 13.6 cms

Ex. private collection, Munich, Germany; acquired 1980's. Accompanied by a photocopy of a German State cultural export license issued for this item.

A red figure pottery krater (wine mixing bowl) decorated with figures and palmettes. One side depicts a naked athlete holding a strigil and staff, the other side depicts a robed figure.

Greek, Athens, mid 4th Century BC

Rim and foot both neatly repaired on one side, minor chips as seen in the photographs
