Here are the exhibits from our Insect Study Celebration. Parents and guests learned from the students about many different insects including mealworms, waxworms, silkworms, painted ladies, and milkweed bugs. We also shared our projects we worked on throughout the unit.

Last week we went on our Urban Park Rangers trip at Prospect Park. A Park Ranger guided us around the park to areas where we found insects. We used nets to collect insects, rolled over logs, and even observed young praying mantises.

We've been learning so much about insects and stages of their life cycle in our classroom. Today we made posters of different insects with oil pastels and watercolors. Next, we will be writing captions for our posters.

We have been learning how to observe mealworm and waxworm larvae. We have really been working on noticing the different structures or body parts and behaviors of the insects. We also made clay waxworms to help us identify the different parts of the insect.

We met the mealworms we will observe and care for. We learned that living things need food, water, air, and space. We set up their habitats with food (bran), water (a potato slice), and holes for air.

Before spring break, 1-402 published another piece of writing. The students all wrote family stories and worked hard to make sure their writing was interesting to read. To celebrate, we shared our pieces with two Pre-K classrooms!

In Reading Workshop, students have been learning how to visualize as they read or make “mind movies” by thinking about the meaning of the words and using their schema. Recently we read Zoo Looking, by Mem Fox, and made collages inspired by different lines from the book.

1-402 has started puppetry. During this residency, the students will spend several weeks creating, building, rehearsing, revising, and narrating their own puppet shows. We already started to create our backdrops and shadow puppet characters and can’t wait to begin rehearsing and telling our stories as clearly as we can!
