Private Tuition and Independent School Entrance Exams - A Look Behind the Scenes

Peter Baker, Senior Education Consultant at Sage Tutors, looks at how private tutors help students achieve top marks

So you’ve read a million brochures and prospectuses, attended a thousand open days, and after a painstaking process, your child has successfully gained a place at the prep school of your choice. Great work! But if you thought it was time to sit back and watch them sail through to university, think again. Increasingly more parents are coming face to face with the daunting fact that gaining a place at a well-respected prep school does not guarantee entry into the senior school later down the line.  Competition is stiff. Your son or daughter will have to outperform hundreds of other pupils sitting the English and Maths entrance papers to gain a place in the senior school. I have even known a senior school turn away the children of two teachers employed at the school because they under-performed in the exam, even though their children had attended the prep school!

The gap-year guidebook 2014
Everything you need to know about taking a gap-year, time out or career break

"A must for anyone taking a year out" Sunday Telegraph
"Practical and comprehensive" The Observer

Everything you need to know about taking a gap-year, year out or career break the gap-year guidebook has comprehensive advice on how to prepare for your gap- and how to cope with life afterwards: travelling, volunteering in the UK and abroad, working around the world, including information about short courses in art, culture, language, music, photography and more...

Includes information on hundreds of providers and suppliers who serve those interested in time out spent either studying, travelling, working or volunteering.

The book's preface, written by Richard Oliver, chief executive of the Year Out Group, explains why gap-years are ‘back in vogue’…

"Gap-years are back in vogue with a significant increase in the number of people applying for projects reversing the downward trend of the past three years. While people of all ages now take time out and use the services of gap-year organisations, it is still those aged 18 to 24 that form over 70% of the gap-year market and of these the majority are school leavers. This is group that was most affected by the significant rise in tuition fees that was announced by the Government in 2010 and came into effect in 2012.

"Such was the scale of the increase in 2012 that teachers, career advisers and parents understandably urged students to forego their plans for a gap-year and secure their place at university by 2011. The hiatus stretched into 2012 as school leavers were undecided about whether to go to university or straight into employment. A year on and the situation is much clearer. Students are considering their options more carefully and once again their advisers are encouraging them to at least consider the benefits of taking a gap-year."
