This Earth eater cichlid have babies! These Amazonian fish are mouth brooders – they protect their eggs and young by carrying them in their mouths. Lee Newman, the Aquarium's Curator of Tropical Waters, took this photo of the cichlid spitting out her fry. You can see this in action on your next visit to the Aquarium in the Amazon gallery. #fishfacts   #Aquarium   #babies

Clownfish
These colorful fish are always a visitor favorite (thanks in large part to a certain Disney movie—you know the one). Clownfish have a symbiotic relationship with anemones. In this mutualism, clownfish have a protected shelter (the stinging anemone keeps predators away), and anemones also receive protection (clownfish are aggressive defenders of their anemone dwelling).

See this mutualism at work in our Living Corals exhibit!

Cichlids and Cichlid Tanks  -

* Flower horn cichlids *

Flower horn cichlids are ornamental aquarium fish noted for their vivid colors and the distinctively shaped heads for which they are named. Their head protuberance, or kok, is formally termed a "nuchal hump." Like blood parrot cichlids, they are man-made hybrids that do not exist in nature. First developed in Malaysia and Taiwan, they are now kept by fish hobbyists worldwide.

Aquarium (fish tank) Aquarist Hobbyist Breeder Pet Care
Introduction
Tropical Fish Pet Care
Posts and discussions about aquariums (fish tanks), freshwater, saltwater, reefs, plants, ponds, fish tanks, rocks, filtration etc...

Tropical fish include fish found in tropical environments around the world, including both freshwater and salt water species. Tropical fish are popular as aquarium fish, due to their often bright coloration. In freshwater fish, this coloration typically derives from iridescence, while salt water fish are generally pigmented. [wiki]

An aquarist owns fish or maintains an aquarium, typically constructed of glass or high strength plastic. Cuboid aquaria are also known as fish tanks or simply tanks, while bowl-shaped aquaria are also known as fish bowls. Size can range from a small glass bowl to immense public aquaria. Specialized equipment maintains appropriate water quality and other characteristics suitable for the aquarium's residents.

An aquarium (plural aquariums or aquaria) is a vivarium consisting of at least one transparent side in which water-dwelling plants or animals are kept. Fishkeepers use aquaria to keep fish, invertebrates, amphibians, marine mammals, turtles, and aquatic plants. The term combines the Latin root aqua, meaning water, with the suffix -arium, meaning "a place for relating to". [wiki]
