Type of appeal: Rejected Submission
Portal Name: Merry Point Ferry
Reason for appeal:

The Merry Point cable-ferry is a point of local pride for Lancaster County residents, both for its historical significance (see below), and because it showcases the union of water and agriculture (it crosses the Corrotoman river and connects two areas that are still primarily agricultural) which are both still critical to the economy of the area.

- Historical significance (apart from just being old):
  - A ferry has been in operation at Merry Point since 1773
  - The wharf on the Merry Point side of the river was a destination for sailing ships and eventually steamboats.
    - According to the Daily Press article below: "Tobacco was shipped to Europe and slaves were brought into Virginia at this port."
  - It is one of only two free cable car ferries in Virginia

- More off-the-beaten-path tourist attractions (i.e., if you weren’t a local, you wouldn’t necessarily know to go here)
  - It connects two ends of route 604: a Virginia "Scenic Byway"
  - It carries 23,000+ vehicles per year
  - Is a common destination for cyclists and other visitors to the area
