Frank Stephenson designs beautiful electric boat
Classy Wood Pairs Well With Lead-Acid Batteries

The question is answered. Designer Frank Stephenson can do as well creating vehicles meant for water as he does creating vehicles meant for land. The man whose hands have labored over the Mini Cooper, Fiat 500, Ferrari F430, McLaren 670S, and McLaren 570S, took the sixties wooden day-craft for inspiration and, per his specialty, made it sleek.

Unlike his terrestrial works, however, this 31-footer called is powered by a "torpedo-shaped" 4.2-kilowatt electric pod motor juiced by eight Varta 12-volt marine batteries. That adds up to 14.7 kilowatt-hours of storage, enough to get Stephenson and company from his home at Henley-on-Thames to the Cotswolds about ten hours away, and back. Charging points all along the river mean he doesn't need to sweat range, though. Plus, the benefit to traveling on a river is that at least one direction could be simply floating, if necessary.

The boat itself is a combination of rosewood and mahogany from Africa and Brazil, laid up with fifteen layers of laquer when it was built and another five every year. As of this year it shines with 35 coats of protection. Up front there's a nod to his work on land that's still in keeping with the theme of times gone by: a mermaid hood ornament from a 1932 Cadillac. Head over to The Drive to read more about Stephenson's creation and its antecedents. You can also check out some other electric boats with an automaker connection from times past here (the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept) and here (the EPIC 23e from Aptera co-founder Chris Anthony).

Maxims for the Flats
Tips for more successful saltwater fly fishing. The old saw, “Ten percent of fishermen catch 90 percent of the fish” might go double for saltwater fly fishers, given the technical nature of fly fishing. Even more so for sight fishing the flats.

South Florida Peacock Bass
When you hear the word bass, most think of sparkly boats, baitcasters and big tournament payouts. But for fisherman in South Florida, the peacock bass is the staple in the local freshwater systems. With their aggressive eats, strong runs and beautiful colors, these fish have become prized gamefish.

We had an awesome experience at Captain Joe's. Rented a 20 ft boat for two hours using the Yelp $155 for $210 deal. I decided to go it alone without a captain in board, Francesca was very helpful in teaching me the basic boat driving skills. The two hour ride around the bay was the highlight of our Miami vacation. While docking upon return, I accidentally hit one of those wooden poles at the marina, the impact left several visible extensive scratches and blemishes on the boat. According to the rental agreement I would've been liable to pay for the damages and as per the employees at the dock the boat needed a new paint job in this case. Captain Joe came out to inspect and assess the situation and in a bout of extreme generosity decided not to charge me anything at all for the damages! I was pleasantly shocked and surprised and for that I'm very grateful. Will definitely return next time we're visiting Miami.

Had a great time ! My family & I came here last week and did a private tour of all the famous islands in Miami Beach. Captain Joe helped us pick which tour we wanted; the prices were really fair for the amount of time you out out on the water and all the different sights you get to see! We thoroughly enjoyed our boat day and look forward to coming back.

I have never hired his services, I will not do in the future. Unfortunately I met him in the 79 Street ramp, because he was blocking the dock area where we were waiting at the boat, for my husband to bring the truck and take te boat out of water. First, I went with one of my kids to ask him to move, because we needed to leave. He did not pay me any attention. I asked him again, to please move his truck, because we were waiting for him. At that time, he answered, by telling me that he was waiting for a boat. I asked him again to please move, because his boat was not at the ramp yet, we were already there, he was blocking my husband's track path and we have two kids. He simply said that he would not move and that we needed to get in the boat again, me, my kids and husband, turn on the boat motor, and move to another dock, which would also mean to wait in line again. I couldn't believe how he was treating me. So disrespectful. In order to avoid any confrontations we did. It was unbelievable. I would like to report it with the authorities and I will. I took a picture of him and his truck.

Went out with a bunch of my friends for my birthday and had a blast! We got to bring our own drinks which was nice and our captain took us to a beautiful sandbar that we stayed at for the day. Captain joe was very nice and gave us a beautiful boat to go out on for great price that was just in my range! I will be back again soon!

He will screw you if he can!!! AVOID!!! My experience with Captain Joe's was all around HORRIBLE!!! I can't think of anything this guy could have done worse. Let me summarize what happened to me: (1) First, he let me reserve a boat that wasn't available. When I arrived, I found out that it had been out under repair for two weeks. (2) He refused to provide a replacement boat for the same price. Instead, he tried to upsell me for a boat that was almost twice the price. (3) He refused to refund my money even though I never got a boat. I had to get my money back through the credit card dispute process, which took over three weeks. He resisted that too. (4) He will leave you stranded if you have problems. He told me that if I broke down, I would have to call Sea Tow, which runs a couple hundred bucks an hour. He won't come pick you up even though he has other boats sitting there. (5) From what I saw, his boats aren't very nice. He also told me not to shut the boat off if I stopped. What does that say about his boats? (6) His website lists several boats as "ocean access" but that's a lie. Once I got there he said none of his boats could go on the ocean. He said they were only rigged for 10 feet of water. (7) If you're late getting there, he starts charging you anyway, and if you bring the boat back even 1 minute late, he fines you $400 (It's in his contract that he sends you after you book). (8) His location isn't the best. It's a 45 minute idle speed ride to get anywhere, and when you figure you have to come back, you realize you end up wasting a lot of time (with him threatening to charge you for being late). (9) This guy was an incredible jerk to me. You just can't reason with him. He was very belligerent and combative. He seemed to take pleasure in leaving me without a boat. My advice is to avoid this clown like the plague. there are several other boat rental places in Miami who will treat you much better and have better maintained boats. We found one at bayside that was much better, a night and day difference.
