When making composite parts it’s extremely important to remove as much air as possible during the layup and cure. Air in the finished part is called a void and is a prime candidate for cracks to start, for example check out this rookie made plate. Common ways to remove the air are vacuum bagging, autoclaving, or using shrink tape. #BonusTip, getting good compaction also means components can be lighter and have a higher specific stiffness.

We are celebrating our Rock West family with a #techniciantuesday this week.
Lety has been the lead in our kitting area since she started at Rock West in March of 2010. So to any of you who have ordered one of our roll wrap tubes more than likely her hands were the second step in the manufacturing process. But she began her journey into the composites industry in 1995. Outside of Rock West Lety enjoys playing with her grand kids, going to the movies and hiking.

There's a time and a place for carbon fiber (most times and places right!?) but alas, the same's for glass. #Fiberglass is not only cheap, but it is an electrical insulator (i.e., non-conductive) and we can manipulate it much the same as we can carbon fibers - Orienting the fibers so that strength and stiffness is optimized. While not as strong as #carbonfiber, it is still stronger than steel.
