Risks of Development Work in #Yemen

Despite largely falling out of the headlines after the popular uprisings of 2011, Yemen remains the poorest country in the Middle East and continues to suffer from widespread insecurity. In this climate, kidnappings have become increasingly prevalent as both a remunerative and a political tool. This blog post by Martin Jerrett, Programme Manager for an international NGO and a resident of Sana’a since 2012, offers a personal insight into some of the realities of life in the capital and a reminder of the daily risks taken by those involved in international development programmes in the country.

It is still a sad thing that many countries and cultures still accept discrimination on skin colour or religious grounds. Even if the laws are changed, the people's attitudes still remain. Education and time will slowly turn this around, I hope.

Wonderful..

Short Story: Love Struck By Haifa Bitar Syrian writer and ophthalmologist from Latakia. She has published eleven collections of short stories and nine novels. Her collection The Whore won the Abu Al-Qassim Al-Shabi prize in 2003.

EXCERPTS:

I had never, in my whole life, been able to understand love as a sickness. Love should not destroy our dignity. Beautiful feelings should not make us hang our heads and burn our eyes with tears. When I suggested that she get rid of their pictures and letters to help her forget, she refused, saying, “I can’t shred two years of my life.”
I had never, in my whole life, been able to understand love as a sickness.

“If I had a mobile phone, it would never stop ringing,” Putin said when asked about this most recently in 2010. “More than that, when my home phone rings, I don’t ever answer it.”
- Putin

How American Drone Strikes are Devastating Yemen

"Some of the children have been affected," says Principal Al Qawly about his students' mental state vis-a-vis drone strikes. "They get nervous from any small sound. Many of them are angry, or they don't talk as much. Some of them can't sleep."
