Hey everyone, there's another Kickstarter I think is worth funding, especially if you're interested in learning basic robotics. I know the people running this one, they're MIT alumni and really awesome people. As always, any pledge amount helps. If you want to give them more money than a pledge level and don't want to actually take the course (they're very interested in getting students through the robot arm kit levels), you can pledge however much you feel like and just select the pledge level you want. They're on track to make their goal, but I wanted to spread the word a little more.

They're also the first Kickstarter project I've seen that's posted screenshots of the backend, which is fun. Check their first update to see some of what the dashboard for running a project looks like.

Thanks!

I hadn't thought about the colors of the sign, just how it gave the picture a sense of scale. Thanks for the feedback, I'll look for that sort of thing in the future.

Keeping up with going through pictures takes longer than catching up on email.

Anyway, here's some stuff from around my yard right after I got my camera.

Finally went through most of the pictures from my Iceland trip, here are large versions of a lot of good ones.

Pictures from my Iceland trip, I'm pretty sure most of these are ones I took, but a few are from my uncle and possibly my dad. I'll be uploading more later, these are just a bunch of ones that I think might make good desktop backgrounds.

I'm interested in learning how to do 3d modeling/texturing/animation, primarily to make creatures, objects, buildings, etc. for games. Ideally around the level of detail games like Guild Wars have (see https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=guild+wars+2+screenshots for a bunch of examples). I doubt I can make anything that good any time soon, but I'd love to get to the point that I can make models more detailed than poorly drawn 3d stick figures.

Any suggestions for where to start? I don't really have any experience learning how to do artistic things so I'm not really sure where to start. I've done some 3d modelling before, but so far it's only been extremely crude models, such as a sphere and a couple cones stuck together. I've done a decent amount of CADing with solidworks, but I doubt that would translate very well.

Also, any ideas for software? Working on linux is pretty much a requirement. I expect Blender is what I'll use, but I figured I should ask in case there's something way better. If it blows Blender out of the water, I wouldn't mind if it isn't free.

Here's another Kickstarter I think is worth pitching, it's by the same people who made Myst, Riven (sequel to Myst), and Myst V: End of Ages (the last in the Myst series), and several other games. It's another gamein the spirit of Myst, and looks beautiful. I'm really hoping it gets funded so I'll get a chance to play it. They're very near their goal and have four days left, it'll be a squeeze.

Thanks, it's my favorite too. These are all freehand, but I'm getting a tripod later this week that'll fit in my backpack so I'll be able to have it with me more often.

I spent last Monday evening & night in SF for the first time and took a lot of pictures. This one stood out while I was reviewing them so I decided to upload it ahead of the others. More to come, along with higher resolution versions on my Flickr.

Same album as my Flickr post, except smaller images. Posting since I couldn't figure out how to share the album without posting about it.

20 second exposure at night from the circle outside our house while our Prius turned into our driveway. You can see the headlights down the road, and the tail lights lighting up the left and showing through the bushes. There's a few stars visible, but they aren't very clear.
