The ideas, writings and vision for The Adventures of Arnold
A. Airplane started the day Bill Slentz held his grandchild in
his arms. As Jace Parker Slentz peacefully slept in his grandfathers arms, Bill had, what our family calls, an aha moment, or a surprised by JOY moment. In his journal on November 11, 2010, Bill writes, As I sat there holding him in my arms and just looking at him, my heart filled with a love I haven't felt in many years. I remember that same love for my children and my other grandchildren, but it was easier back then before the troubles and disappointments of life had kicked me around. As I sat there holding him and looking at his little face, tears came to my eyes and I just wanted to hold him forever and feel the love I was feeling right then. Then I tried to analyze why I love him so much. He wasn't doing anything. Later on in Bill's writings that day he compared his feelings of love for Jace to the way God feels about us. He quotes, Then I thought about God's relationship with me. I have always thought I needed to perform; to DO something for Him to make sure He would love me. But as impossible as it seems, His heart is capable of loving me even more than I love Jace and when He looks at me His heart fills with love too. I just have to be there. I don't need to give Him a reason to love me, He JUST does! That year Bill not only had a new grandbaby, but he was blessed with new visions and dreams of writing a book, one book, that is, and that book would be dedicated to Jace Parker Slentz on his first birthday. The book would be about a little bi-plane named Arnold A. Airplane. Arnold that experiences, not only adventures, but learns life-lessons, morals and family values through those adventures. In Arnold's First Flight, he experiences consequences to not listening to and respecting his parents. In the second book, Billy the Bully, Arnold has problems with a plane that bullies everyone and learns how deal with the situation. In Bill's third book, "Ole Bert the Bomber", Arnold and his friend, Herman the Helicopter witness other young planes being disrespectful and mean to an old bomber plane that served and assisted in bringing soldiers home from the wars. Arnold and Herman learn to appreciate and respect those who fight for our freedom. The latest book that was recently published is dedicated the children (and adults) who struggle with disabilities and limitations. It's about Merry Mary Monoplane, who chooses to focus on the things she CAN do instead of the things she can't.Throughout each book, Bill is able to use Arnold and his friends to teach young people how to deal with life's circumstances, make right choices and develop a sense of appreciation for others. Our prayer is that these books will impact the younger generation and bring them into growing and good relationships with others.
