Pavlovsk

For locals Pavlovsk park is a bigger attraction than the palace. This naturalistic landscape park is embellished with ponds, pavilions and garden sculpture. A beautiful place to bring your family for the weekend.

The history of Pavlovsk goes back to 1777, when Catherine the Great presented this area to her son, Grand Duke Paul (Pavel in Russian, that's why the name of the ensemble). Together with the lands, Catherine the Great "gave" her son her favourite architect, Charles Cameron, to design both palace and park. Work at Pavlovsk began in 1780. "English gardens" were at the height of fashion and inspired Cameron's design of a seemingly natural landscape, dotted with pavilions, romantic ruins, garden sculpture and attractive vistas around the Slavyanka river.
