Falling on the Bright Side

In Michael Gray’s new novel, social worker Larry is not happy to be working in a nursing home and is too demoralized to appreciate the flow of life around him. Then he meets Bill, a clinical psychologist, lying comatose after a left hemisphere stroke, as Philip, his patient, listens attentively to his incoherent attempts to speak. Soon an unusual collaboration arises among these three men.

"Falling on the Bright Side" is inspired by Michael’s work with the disabled through "Friends in Time"--the non-profit he co-founded in collaboration with his friend, Foster. It tells a story that is increasingly common for many people who spend their last days in a nursing home, and for the families who wish it could be otherwise.

Michael will be reading from "Falling" at the independently-owned, author-friendly local bookstore, Bookworks.

When:
Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 7:00 PM

Where:
Bookworks, a bookstore in Los Ranchos (Albuquerque), NM
4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW (just north of Griegos)

You can read the first chapter and a synopsis of "Falling on the Bright Side" on Michael’s blog:

Copies of Michael’s third book can be purchased at Bookworks, Treasure House, Amazon.com, or through the Publisher: www.ABQPress.com (& soon to be an e-book)

In Michael Gray's science fiction novel, a comet as wide across as Lake Ontario is heading our way. In 90 days it will be here, careening through the inner solar system at 30 miles a second.

Another world is trying to catch our attention, because human technology finally has a worthy occasion. The same technology that has launched harpoons into living beings for centuries, can nudge a rock larger than Manhattan off its deadly course.

First contact turns out to be a late chapter in an ancient dialogue, sent in the hope that their friends, with whom humans share a planetary home, can be saved. However the message, couched in a language that has been spoken on Earth for countless millennia, is meaningless to humanity.

As three months hurtle past, can the self-appointed “Stewards of Creation,” who think that dolphins merely click and ping in order to navigate, succeed in joining this ancient conversation? Will humans wake up and smell the seawater running in their own veins? Or will the Bible’s “Parable of the Talents” come true, and a vaporized South Pole icecap expand the ocean home of the whales, who did not squander their inheritance, while humans are left with a few shrunken islands in an ocean world?

Author | Albuquerque, NM, USA

I’m a Canadian living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I connected with a friend who has ALS.  After I returned from a six-month program at the Nyingma Institute, we launched a non-profit, "Friends in Time", to help people with MS and ALS.

My memoir, "The Flying Caterpillar" (ABQ Press, 2012), gives an account of my experiences with "Friends in Time" and explores the influences that have inspired me.

In "Asleep at the Wheel of Time" (ABQ Press), a SF novel about Whales, Aliens and humans, I express my concern about the state of planet Earth in light of our accumulating indifference to the plight of our home world.

My new novel, "Falling on the Bright Side", draws directly on my experience working with the disabled.  "Falling" tells the story of people who have been shelved in nursing home warehouses who have lost their value to society, and explores how the human dimension continues to shine in these human beings.

In my own life I have discovered that people in the process of losing their identities, occupations, and friends can illuminate the human predicaments we share.

The Dance of Earth and Sky

A tree is an entity whose very purpose in life seems to include the task of conducting water from the darkness of the earth, into the realm of light.

A tree also drinks light in through the photosynthetic capacity of leaves, and–since it is in the nature of sunlight to travel, to fill the space around it–this sunlight, striking the leaves of a tree on planet Earth, tarries on its journey into the vastness of space. As light flows down the trunk into the darkness of the earth, it provides the energy needed for the roots to grow and to sip on yesterday’s rain.

The body of the tree is the meeting of these two flows. Not just the vehicle to conduct light into the earth and water back towards the sky, but the child of those two flows. Sunlight can move into the welcoming darkness of Mother Earth because she has built a tower to receive it, a beacon tossing its leaves in the breeze. And the fibers and flowing sap from Mother Earth can defy gravity because Father Sun has kindled the life of leaf and all those thirsty pores and cells along the way. A tree stands between earth and sky and is the very meeting ground of their love affair.

Not so different from you and me.

Departing the Familiar

Sitting in a railway carriage as it pulls out from Charing Cross station (or Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Montreal) we depart the city and travel along tracks that were forged in smelters and poured into moulds. Traversing the fields, we view the cows, horses, crows, through the rectangular frame of our coach window.

Recognizing that lower is on a continuum with higher, we feel the padded seat beneath us, appreciate the landscape passing before our mind’s eye (the click-click-clicking of the wheels on the tracks, the ding-ding-dinging as children wave from cars parked at the crossings), the slow turning of Gaia on her axis as she orbits our Sun within our solar system and, moving out further still, the clouds of interstellar gas from which our home planet congealed so long ago.

Travelling in a time that enables all to dance before us and in us, abiding as a child of a space that allows all this to rise and fall, like waves rolling onto the beach of awareness—a fathoming of a sea in which all is knowing and knowable—we begin to merge into this buoyant realm and relax our desperate struggle to stay afloat on its surface. Sinking into the lower we discover the higher within the dancing wholeness of being.

Hello Kitty

Yesterday evening a relative shows up after dinner
And tells her story, a deep story, a sad story,
Her cat, her dear long-time companion, is now gone,
Downed by cancer, this cat an old cat, its cancer operable,
But what would be the use, it would keep life going
Only for a week or two, just time to say goodbye,
Then a hard death, such an affliction, and what
Would be gained from such an infliction: more pain,
More grief, less money, so I chose to put the quite sick,
Beat up, soon-to-die-anyway old cat down. Done.
Then grieving relative walks away, with a sadness weighing
Down her heavy steps, but soon she comes right back,
A bounce in her gait, a proud smile on her well
Satisfied lips, eyes bright with signs of new ownership,
For she has in her arms a new cat, and what a cat
That cat is, in its lounging stretch, four or five feet long,
Its fur elegantly well coifed variegated silvery sheen
Ruffled over slightly softer silver background fur,
And the belly creamy off-white pampered stretch of ease,
And eyes holding a dream hauteur that commands us without
Even noticing us, so we bow, and scrape the floor, and
Just barely restrain ourselves from cheering, or weeping,
Or whatever it is one does when a royal shows up,
And the bearer of the cat says simply: She’s only a
Kitty, just imagine what’s to come, I love her so,
And I’ll be so good to her, she will have to be good to me.
And the cat yawns, and I start coughing up a fit, my throat
Tickled raw by the finest of just shed cat fur, and I,
Stunned and staggered, indicate the cat will have to leave,
Have to be scooted quickly out of our home.
I can’t take it, I am allergic to this cat at least, away with it.
And my relative, without any concern says: And why the cat?
Why not you? And the cat lifts its lovely head, cozy’s into
Its bearer’s arms, purrs softly, and blinks out, with remarkable
Confidence, with an assured surety, from bejeweled eyes: Yes, why not you?
