“Sometimes people say we are giving them pills to stop them from having children or even to kill them,” according to a Carter Center-supported Haitian health worker. The workers know that building trust and hope with citizens in impoverished regions is critical in order to treat them for debilitating lymphatic filariasis. This trust has been instrumental in a six-year campaign that has decreased disease prevalence in part of Port-au-Prince from 51 to 17 percent. Read more. http://bit.ly/2jhFu1c

Binational Plan for Malaria Elimination in Hispaniola Island Recognized by Global Leaders

“The collaborative effort of Haiti and the Dominican Republic to eliminate not one, but two mosquito-borne diseases from their shared island shows that improving public health transcends cultural differences, even in historically and politically sensitive situations,” said former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, whose Carter Center in 2008 helped launch the binational effort to eliminate malaria and lymphatic filariasis, a disfiguring neglected tropical disease.
