Un artículo que analiza porqué surgieron los grupos anti-vacunas y el sinsentido de que una de las terapias más eficaces del siglo XX siga hoy siendo puesta en duda, por personas sin formación, y con gran impacto mediático. Con las vacunas se salvan entre 2 y 3 millones de vidas anuales.

LAS VACUNAS SALVAN VIDAS
Podemos seguirnos inventando datos, podremos creernos lo que digan los iluminados (algunos incluso muy famosos), pero la ciencia es incontestable: uno de los mayores logros del siglo XX son las vacunas. Salvan al año "MILLONES DE VIDAS".

The immune system is a complex structure, built over a person’s life in response to environmental conditions. Antibodies, proteins that tag and attack viruses and bacteria, “remember” past invaders, allowing white blood cells to quickly respond during subsequent infections. Because different groups of people encounter different diseases—the European settlers had high exposure to smallpox, measles, and influenza thanks to close contact with livestock—they develop different antibodies. But what about the genes behind the immune system? Could those also change vulnerability to certain diseases?

One of the characteristics of the CNS is the lack of a classical lymphatic drainage system. Although it is now accepted that the CNS undergoes constant immune surveillance that takes place within the meningeal compartment1–3, the mechanisms governing the entrance and exit of immune cells from the CNS remain poorly understood4–6. In searching for T cell gateways into and out of the meninges, we discovered functional lymphatic vessels lining the dural sinuses. These structures express all of the molecular hallmarks of lymphatic endothelial cells, are able to carry both fluid and immune cells from the CSF, and are connected to the deep cervical lymph nodes. The unique location of these vessels may have impeded their discovery to date, thereby contributing to the long-held concept of the absence of lymphatic vasculature in the CNS. The discovery of the CNS lymphatic system may call for a reassessment of basic assumptions in neuroimmunology and shed new light on the etiology of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases associated with immune system dysfunction.

Preparar esta charla me ha llevado unos meses de reflexión, de conversaciones con mi entorno (estudiantes, compañeros, familiares, amigos, mi pareja... y conmigo mismo). Muchas preguntas y respuestas en este viaje...
 
Y finalmente un producto, esta charla... un destilado de muchos años de vocación docente. De Valladolid para el mundo, espero que la disfrutéis y sobre todo, que si os gusta, lo digáis y me ayudéis a su difusión.
