Is winter Yurt camping and photography for you?

+Jim Davis will be traveling up to the Bruce Peninsula next weekend for a scouting trip for an upcoming Photo Adventure we are planning which will include Yurt camping. There have been many questions about Yurt camping in the winter, some have said they have no experience camping in the winter and feel intimidated by the prospect.

Let us help demystify this

Yurts are small circular huts that are traditionally used by Mongolian and Turkish nomads, they have become more popular these days in North America for all season camping as they can offer some creature comforts like beds, warmth and a place to relax after a long day enjoying the great outdoors without having to lug around pounds of gear.

This is where we feel Yurts will become an excellent addition to our Photo Adventure's during the winter or transitional months of the year. I have always said that immersing ones self in the environment you will be photographing will result in better images. You get to know the area better through all of your senses, daily travel time is reduced as you are already there and when unique lighting conditions are presented you are ready. At days end there is a comfortable place to gather, share stories and photographs from the day or continue shooting into the night.

Trips like these create an atmosphere, experience and friendships that are long lasting in your memories. Winter Yurt camping and photography are a great way to experience a winter wonderland. So whether you are a seasoned professional or just starting out in photography this could be something for you!

Winter Photo Adventure Update

Fresh back from our scouting trip to the Bruce Peninsula +Jim Davis is firming up details on our winter Photo Adventure. We have scouted locations and gathered all the info required to move forward with planning. The Yurts will be available starting February 17th. We are planning the next adventure towards the end of February or beginning to mid March. For anyone interested please comment below or send us an email located on the about section of this page. For those that might be traveling from afar we can accommodate a few people to help break up the travel time.

We feel we have come up with a great opportunity with the combination of Yurt camping, beautiful scenery and atmosphere to enhance your experience which will create memories for a lifetime… Oh and excellent photographs!

For those that have asked if this is a workshop or photowalk format, it is a workshop with adventure added in. We will pass on our knowledge in both how to find and research good locations as well as technical aspects of gear, subject, light and composition. For anyone not comfortable with the Yurt camping experience there are hotels in the area to accommodate this if needed

Please stay tuned as we finalize the details and announce dates and cost.

For now here are a few images from this past weekend to give you an idea of what awaits!

A Recipe for Success

+Jim Davis is headed up to the Bruce Peninsula this weekend on a Photo Adventure scouting trip. This is a fact finding trip to gather information for our Nature through Your Eyes Photo Adventure we are offering this winter and into the year. Weather has delayed our efforts this year due to lack of snow, this seems to be changing! We already have a few locations we know will be excellent photo opportunities and we will be looking to add to the list.

Scouting locations is one of the key ingredients to creating successful images, as well as adaptability while out in the field. Our scouting begins before we even arrive at our location using various tools and skills we have developed over the years. Understanding the lay of the land, weather conditions and other factors ensures we come prepared.

How does this affect you? Well we do the background work which is conducive to your chance for success and pass this knowledge with guidance to you so you can use these same techniques.

We are planning on setting up two live on location Hangouts on Saturday and Sunday and we invite everyone to join us for this unique behind the scenes look into the beauty of the Bruce Peninsula

Stay tuned as times will be announced earlier each day.

Introduction

Nature Through Your Eyes

  • We have passion for our natural world, and a desire to share it with others
  • offer education and opportunities through workshops, photowalks and the online community
  • build relationships to help each other grow as photographers, as individuals.
We are offering photographic workshops and adventures along the Niagara Escarpment from Niagara Falls to Tobermory in Ontario, Canada.

The Hamilton area offers excellent opportunity for waterfalls and gorges as well as the Bruce Peninsula along the shores of Georgian Bay and Lake Huron extending up to Flower Pot Island.

Bios

I have spent my life exploring nature in remote locations, whether it be on foot or by canoe. I have traveled to many countries photographing the natural environment as well as urban landscapes and people. Photography has been a part of this for 25 years. I have recently started doing small workshops in the field as well as my own Workshop Hangout Series on Google+ called Nature through My Eyes. My work has been seen in Canoe Roots magazine as well as online publications. The desire to share knowledge gained over the years has lead me to starting these workshops. My approach is both rooted in emotional response to nature from a philosophical side as well as presenting a solid foundation of fundamental skills to build upon.
