WOW! So the news from Do Land this evening (nick name for Susan Garrett Dog Agility Training camp Say Yes) is that in the first 24hours of being open for the free visitors pass registration, some  18,000 people so far have joined the new Recallers course...  and crashed the servers. Unprecedented numbers for Recallers and a bummer as we don't get to see our first night's material for a few days while the technical issues are being worked out, but WOW for the number of people who want to learn about training their dog through fun, positive, motivational, force free techniques.

Over the next few days we will likely all be hearing fireworks. If you know or are unsure if your dog experiences anxiety due to loud noises (such as fireworks) please be mindful when opening doors or back yard gates that your dog does not dart out on the street out of fear. If you have friends visiting for festivities, make sure they are aware not to let the dog accidentally slip out the door. Even if your dog has been ok in the past, dog's attitudes towards mysterious loud noises can change over time so watch your dog over the first few bangs you both hear and monitor his reactions.
While walking your dog, especially if you know your dog experiences anxiety, please make sure your dog is leashed securely and wears proper ID in case he does run off. Collars that hang loosely like a necklace that the dog can back out of easily in a panic are not safe. If you walk your dog in a harness or a head halter, make sure you have a safety connection hooked up to a properly fitting collar. If you are unsure if your dog's walking get up is safe and secure, do a back out test before heading out for your evening walk. Can you pull your dog's collar or harness off over their head? If you can, even if it's a bit hard to do, that means your dog will likely be able to back out if panics.
If you have a new puppy or a new to you dog even if they seem ok it never hurts to do a little preventative counter conditioning work. Think of it as investment. Get a bowl of yummy treats ready and any time you hear fire works, chuck the pup a treat! It's very simple, it can be very fun, and it can be a great way to prevent any future brewing fears.
To all my friends who will be spending these holidays in the bathroom with their dog cowering in the bathtub. Stay classy, get a movie going on the laptop propped up on the toilet seat. Better yet, have a full volume movie night, you just might trick the dog that it's not the end of the world. Great excuse to cook up some steak and share it with your best friend!

Happy Canada Day and 4th Of July AKA Scare The Crap Out Of Your Dog Day as so perfectly illustrated by The Oatmeal. So happy and thankful that none of my dogs and none of the dogs staying with me this week have issues with thunder or the sound of fireworks.

Too funny (and perhaps a little disturbing). Reminds me of at least a couple dogs I know!
