What is the maximum amount of Circles one can have?

Jo McCoy: It's not 5000 circles, but 5000 people in your circles. There are some that have a lot more than 5000 on Twitter. On Facebook, they max you at 5000 friends unless you have a fan page, then it's unlimited.

Read somewhere that having more than 5000 people that you circle/follow would bog down your contacts in Gmail and other Google apps.
