Is Google the new Microsoft? | May 6, 2012

I’m not sure that the comparison is apt. Google may want to be the new Microsoft but I don’t think they really have the dominance they need. In the 1990’s Microsoft had a near monopoly on Operating Systems and Office Suites.

Today, Google doesn’t hold such a dominant position. Facebook dominates social media, Microsoft dominates Office Suites, and Apple dominates shiny electronic gadgets.

Google’s advantage is that they offer more services than any of their competitors and are thus able to integrate them. Google makes it so easy. Why use Office Live when I already have Google Docs, why use Dropbox when I can get Google Drive?

Google’s disadvantage is that their competitors specialize in the fields they dominate and have a big head start. And deep pockets.
