What if you sued the government – and the government supported your lawsuit? | June 16, 2012

Two lawsuits have been filed against the Cook County Clerk’s office for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. The Clerk’s office is prohibited from issuing the licenses because same sex marriage is illegal in Illinois.

The Cook County Clerk, David Orr, filed a response in support of the lawsuits. Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez has also filed a response in support of the lawsuits. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan supports the lawsuits too. Finally Illinois Governor Pat Quinn supports same sex marriage.

So it’s left to a third party to defend against the lawsuit; if they can prove they have legal standing.
