Do you really know your kids? - Do you really know your kids? The 15th anniversary of the horrific Columbine tragedy in the US has come and gone and yet we continue to see a rise in school and other mass shootings 83 in the first four months of 2014. Why do the numbers continue to grow? It seems that as a society, we’ve perfected the art of teaching sex education and telling our kids that drugs are bad. We know how to take them to the doctor when they have that lingering cough or when something is twisted, sprained, or broken. So why aren’t we placing that same value on their emotional health and psychological well-being asks Dr. Ildiko Tabori, PHD from Los Angeles, CA., or better yet, as parents do you really know your kids? Are we as parents, friends and acquaintances doing our part in helping our children and young adults with their trials and tribulations on a daily basis. How can so many troubled people continue to commit these heinous crimes yet we hear over and over again that their friends and families

Alternative Treatments for Depression - Is medication my only choice? Anti depressant medication is helpful for a lot of people but it has many limitations. First of all, depending on the severity of your depressive state your medication either may not be the right one for you or alternative treatments for depression may have been a better option. Quite simply drugs only work when drugs are required. Unfortunately some doctors put all forms of depression into the same bucket, prescribe medication and apply a wait and see attitude. In some instances there may have been natural remedies or alternative treatments, without medication, that may have been equally as effective. Stigma and Discrimination - Stigma vs. Discrimination! A stigma refers to negative, unfavourable attitude about a given subject and the behaviour it produces. Stigma differs from discrimination.  Discrimination is unfair treatment due to a person’s identity, which includes race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status or disability, including a mental disorder. It is a form of prejudice that spreads fear and misinformation, labels individuals and perpetuates stereotypes. Stigma against people with mental illnesses is oppressive and it prevents many from seeking the help they so desperately need.
