I love when companies have tech blogs, giving a small insight into the technology they are using or ideas that they're thinking about. Coursera just came out with a tech blog and the first article is talking about why they are moving to Scala is there programming language of choice.
Scala itself is a fascinating programming language, designed to be both functional and object-oriented, it runs on top of the JVM. If you are the developer and you hear 'JVM' you instantly think of Java and maybe that sends chills up your back, but Scala gives you an excellent new syntax that is much more developer friendly then what you find in Java. Scala allows you to use the battle tested JVM for your applications, the JVM is one of the most mature and optimized platforms, so this is really nice!
I would love to hear more from Coursera after sometime of them using Scala.http://tech.coursera.org/blog/2014/02/18/why-we-love-scala-at-coursera/
