THE BATTLE OF THE MIND (Part Three)

| For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

Strongholds are sets of wrong beliefs and philosophies, fears, negative experiences and unwholesome fantasies programmed in a person’s unconscious mind as mentioned in part one of this study. These are places in which a person is internally held in bondage (prison). They determine a person’s perspective, thought pattern, reactions and responses to certain situations and events. They exert influence on our decisions, moods, feelings and reasons. They house a person’s childhood, religious and traumatic experiences. They contain negative images, pictures, scenes, sounds, words and feelings.

When negative or criminal thoughts are entertained, nourished and accepted in the conscious mind they are gradually transmitted to the unconscious mind through the process I called spiritual osmosis.

Osmosis: This is a process of gradual or unconscious assimilation or absorption of ideas, opinions, suggestions and knowledge.

These thoughts or materials are arranged, classified and filed for easy retrieval whenever they are needed. The contents of these strongholds sometimes surface on the conscious mind without invitation. They are involuntary flashes of past events, experiences and fears from within (unconscious mind). Therefore, to deal with any stronghold in your unconscious mind that can influence you to act negatively, you have to employ spiritual weapons in pulling it down. The renewal of the mind is a factor that will ensure the dismantling of these strongholds, reconstructing your character and establishing a new thought pattern in you.

According to the Scripture, the surest way that guarantees transformation is mind renewal. Transformation means to metamorphose. It is a complete change of character, appearance and attitude. A man is a product of his thoughts. What a man spends time thinking about is what he will eventually become. A man who spends most of his time fantasising about sex may eventually become a rapist. If you want to change your behaviour you need to change your thoughts.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…………

Proverbs 23:7, KJV

The most potent and effective spiritual weapon for mind renewal is the Word of God. The Word of God is the only tool that has the ability to penetrate the three realms of man (spirit, soul and body) and bring the desired change. It has an inherent power of creation and transformation, it is spirit and life, it is light and cannot fail.

THE BATTLE OF THE MIND (Part One)

| May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

The three basic elements of man are spirit, soul and body. Man is a spirit that has a soul and lives in a body. The above Scripture proves that man is a tripartite being. The spirit of man is also referred to as the human spirit, the inner man or the inward man. The soul of man is divided into three main parts; the mind, will and emotion. The body basically has five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. With the spirit man contacts the spiritual realm; with the soul he contacts the intellectual realm while he contacts the physical realm with his body.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joint and marrow (body)……….

Hebrews 4:12, (Emphasis mine)

From this Scripture it becomes vividly clear, that there is a point of connection between the spirit and soul. This shows that the spirit and the soul of man are two distinct and separate entities. The human spirit is not the soul and the soul is not the human spirit.

To properly understand how to win the battle over our mind we must be equipped with knowledge on how to take our thoughts captive, pull down strongholds and cast down imaginations. We should be able to know the components of the soul, their functions and how they relate to the human spirit and the body.

THE HUMAN SOUL: The soul is the seat of man’s personality. It has three main components; the mind, will and emotion. The soul of man is what enables him to contact and function within the intellectual and psychological realm.

A. The Mind: The mind is the faculty in a man’s soul that enables him to be conscious, perceive, think, judge and memorise. It is the faculty of intelligence and imagination. Dr. Paul Yonggi Cho, in his book, “The fourth dimension, volume 2” made mention of the conscious and unconscious mind quoting Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist. In my personal study I realised that the mind can truly be said to have two parts, the conscious and unconscious mind.

The conscious mind: It is that part of the mind that receives, entertains and processes thoughts. It is where thinking, analysis and perception take place. It makes man aware of himself and his environments. The conscious mind receives information for analysis and processing mainly from the five senses of the physical body. The conscious mind also can voluntarily or involuntarily receive information from the unconscious mind.

The unconscious mind: Sigmund Freud said that the unconscious mind lies beneath the conscious mind. It acts like a bank only that it does not keep money or gold. It is that part of the mind where analysed and decided information is stored for possible retrieval. It is where habits, ideologies, philosophies, fantasies, traumatic memories, painful emotions, fears, beliefs and wishes are recorded. It is a reservoir of images, sounds and information good or bad that were once conscious but have been forgotten or suppressed. It is a place where the personality of man is formed, based on the inherited traits and other factors such as experiences, beliefs, ideologies and philosophies. Though the unconscious mind is below the conscious mind it can exert an influence on a man’s behaviour and character.

B. The Human Will. The human will is the faculty in a man’s soul that enables him to decide and act. The decision to act or not is based on the information received, properly analysed and processed in the mind. It includes freedom or power of choice. The human will while free, is subject to the influences exerted on it from within or without.

C. The Human Emotion. The human emotion is the faculty in a man’s soul that expresses his inward feelings. It is a response or reaction to internal or external events. Facial and vocal expressions accompany an emotional state which communicates reactions and intentions of actions. The basic human emotions are anger, happiness, fear, disgust, contempt, sadness and surprise. Human emotion is also said to be influenced by hormones. According to author David G. Meyers, human emotion involves "...physiological arousal, expressive behaviours, and conscious experience."

THE BATTLE OF THE MIND (Part Two)

| For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10: 3-5

The conscious mind basically receives information from two sources, namely the internal and external sources. The internal source of information is the unconscious mind while the external sources are the five physical senses (Read the part one of this study). The unconscious mind hosts the record of past things that happened to us whether good or bad, positive or negative. The conscious mind does not have the capacity to hold information for a long time. It is where thinking, analysis and perception take place.

What you see, watch, feel, taste, smell and hear affect your thinking. The devil also takes advantage of these to inject afflicting or obsessive thoughts into your mind. Sometimes, you want to stop what you are thinking about but you cannot stop thinking about it. This is actually the nature of obsessive thoughts the devil injects into your mind. For instance, the devil injects sexual thoughts and images in your mind; you start thinking about it and cannot stop thinking about it even when you want to quit. At this point your Human Will has been weakened; your level of resistance against such thoughts is reduced. Your thought pattern has been hijacked by invisible and powerful beings. It is torture to be in that state of mind. In this situation, you cannot overcome these thoughts by thinking positive thoughts. Your mind is under attack by mind-binding spirit.

The solution to this is to firmly and verbally talk to the evil spirit that is behind the thought. For example, if your mind is obsessively attacked by thoughts of rape or suicide, you should quietly, in a firm tone, command the evil spirit behind the thought to get out of your mind using the Name of Jesus Christ. This is what to say, “You evil spirit that causes me to think of rape, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ, get out of my mind.” Repeatedly say this and you will discover that within a short time the obsession will disappear. This is one of the first steps to living victoriously against unwanted thoughts, demonic oppression and winning the battle of the mind.

Demonic possession, obsession and oppression may not be recognised by some professionals as means by which an individual can be tempted to act evil. The fact that an evil spirit can influence a man to do evil cannot be denied. There are cases all over the Bible where evil spirits control, manipulate and influence men and women to do evil.

Eternal Life (Part 3)

Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

1 Corinthians 2: 6-8

The devil was not ignorant of the fact that Jesus came to distribute God’s Life to men, but the method through which this Life would be given was unknown to him. When his plan to kill Jesus at infancy failed, he resorted to subtly hijack this Life in the wilderness through a series of temptations presented to Christ. Following several failed attempts to kill Jesus before his time by instigating the Jews against him, the devil now resolved to kill Him by plotting His crucifixion at Calvary. What he did not realise though, was that his plot to have Christ crucified was actually God’s plan to distribute His Life to men. For this reason, the plot to crucify Christ at Calvary succeeded because it was God’s ordained plan for the redemption of mankind.

If only the devil had known that the crucifixion of Christ will bring about his own demise, he certainly will not have plotted it! Once again, God’s infinite wisdom was displayed in that His plan for giving Life to man through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ was hidden from the devil and the princes of the world.

Eternal Life in Christ Jesus is the greatest gift God has given to man. What we have in Christ is more than what Adam lost. By the new birth, we possess what Adam missed, the very Life of God. Jesus did not just restore unto us the authority that Adam lost, but He freely gave us the Life he missed. Jesus did not come into the world just to make us rich. There were so many rich men on earth before He came. This is not to suggest that material wealth is outside the scope of God’s plan for us. The point I am making is simply that there is something more important than riches which Christ brought to us. He did not just come so that we can have miracles; many outstanding miracles were performed before He came.

Jesus was not the first to raise the dead, nor the first to divinely multiply food. Jesus walked on the sea while Moses divided the sea. Miracles, signs and wonders could still be performed if Christ did not come, however there was something Christ brought to us that all these great men in the Old Testament could not offer. Christ became superior to these men not by the miracles He performed, but by being the son of God, who died and was raised from the dead, and who through His death and resurrection, has given us Eternal Life. He is alive forever!

THE INVISIBLE YOU!

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5: 23

Man is a spirit being whether he is a believer or not. Man is not a soul as speculated by some religions. Sometimes man is referred to in the Bible as a soul; however, what it simply means is that the seat of his personality is in his soul. It does not mean that he is a soul.

With the spirit man connects the spiritual realm; with the soul he connects the intellectual realm and with the body (physical senses) he connects the physical realm.

The mind is not the human spirit and the human spirit is not the mind. The mind is one of the components of the soul. The human spirit in man is referred to in the Bible as the inner man, the inward man, the new creature, the new man, my spirit, the heart and the belly. Sometimes the words heart and belly used in the Scripture do not refer to the physical organs. These words are used to convey a thought. Note how we use the word ‘heart’ today. We talk about the heart of a matter. What does it mean? Does it mean that a matter has a heart? No, it means the most important part of that matter, i.e. the very core. The human spirit is the main part of man - the core of his being.

While there is a thin line between man’s spirit and his soul, it is the man’s soul that makes him conscious of himself. Even after death the spirit and soul of man are still intact. It is the soul that makes the man conscious of his environment and himself even after physical death. In the spirit realm, man looks very similar to what he looks like in this life. In the realm of the spirit, man’s soul is still intact because he can remember things, and still have emotions. Consider Luke 16: 19-22, for example, in which Jesus narrates the story of Lazarus and the rich man.

A man who is not born again has a dead human spirit. A dead human spirit does not imply a non-functional spirit. It means that his spirit is cut off from the Life of God. His spirit is dead to God and alive to Satan. His spirit is dead to God in the sense that he does not have the Life and nature of God in him. He is alive to the devil and will quickly respond to the devil’s urging.  There are some who contend that the human spirit of an unbeliever is dead in the sense of annihilation. If this is the case, how then do some of them practice witchcraft, occultism and spiritualism? When the Bible therefore talks about death in this regard, it does not mean annihilation, but cessation.

Cessation means to be cut off. An unbeliever’s spirit is cut off from God’s Life and that is why he is dead. He is dead to everything that concerns God and alive to everything that concerns the devil.

Hobart E. Freeman in his book “Every wind of doctrine” said that the inner man is connected to the body by the “Silver cord.” Though there is no Scripture to support this argument, I still believe that there is a point of connection between man’s spirit and his body. Do you have the Life of Christ in your spirit? It’s not about the Church or denomination you belong to.

The tragedy of this century of exploding population is that three of four people have never heard with understanding the way of life in Christ and, even more tragic, half the people of the world cannot hear because there is no one near enough to tell them.

One of every two persons on planet earth lives in a tribe or culture or language group that has no evangelising Church at all. If someone does not go in from the outside, they will not have any way of knowing about Jesus.
