While I certainly endorse rewarding students improving relative to their original ability- is there a truer measure of learning, really? - but I do think there are certain benchmarks that need to be met. The Intelligent Design / Creationist quacks would have us believe that certain facts are optional and a matter of opinion.

Each student needs to have a certain level of mathematics, English comprehension, ect. in order to excel in this world. Not all students will hit that point, due to personal limitations, but it should be strived for. Standardized tests, if nothing else, can serve to gauge where a child falls on this spectrum, and the efficacy of the school in providing them with that information.

So, how true do you think this is?

I'll be honest - #5 on the list (We Were Told That Society Owed Us A Hot Girl) is why i really disliked Sin City. Here is this woman, who as a child was saved from a rapist/murderer, and years later, the only way she can think of to thank her hero is to offer him sex?

And #3 (We Think You're Conspiring With Our Boners to Ruin Us) is the stem of my discomfort with Sucker Punch. What, the only power women have is sex? On one hand, the eighties taught women that we could be powerful without being mannish, but this idea is the other extreme. This is Lysistrata style "Withholding sex is the only way we can get a guy to listen" bs, so it is literally an idea that's 24 centuries old.

Wow, that is young to have that preconception. But on the bright side, that also means you have plenty of time to teach him.

Andy, For me, the point of these articles is to articulate the rage that i feel when these clueless people speak. I am not dumb, but i am often unable to find the words i need to rebut them, and articles like this are not only correct but spoon-feed it all with humor.

Terrifying.

"The Fake Geek Girl has been with me ever since I was eleven and found that I really liked Batman: The Animated Series, when my fear of being labeled a fake geek girl said that if I didn’t become an expert on Batman, the moment I made some kind of mistake or omission I’d be branded as “fake” by the person I was interacting with. Not a novice, a learner, someone who was worth teaching and bringing into the community, but a fake, a poser, somebody who deserved to be kicked out."

I love this response to the Forbes thing that happened last week.

Actually, in all the signatures we have of Shakespeare's, he never spells his name the way we do today. In fact, if I remember correctly, he never spelled it the same way twice.
