Studley. Studley Burroughs. i guess that there are worse names. (We had a poor kid named Deekin Dorkus in my Jr. High.)

Each of us has a superpower or two, and mine is spotting spelling mistakes in books. Seriously, i even catch typos in books by well-published authors like Terry Pratchett and Tad Williams. Sometimes i think i'm supposed to be a book proofreader by profession. i caught one in one of ERB's Tarzan books last night, where he used the wrong character's name when attributing a quote (but that might have been an OCR artifact - i can't tell without a dead-tree copy of the original work). The down-side to my superpower, however, is that my eyes can't refrain from scanning every single word, so i'm a relatively slow reader.

i don't generally mind typos in books, in particular when they're typos of the type which computer spellcheckers cannot find (e.g. in one Tad Williams novel the (only) typo was "window" where it should have said "widow", and a modern computer can't understand such mistakes).

However, typos in comic books piss me off to no end. Why? Because they've got only a few hundred words, at most, and the person listed on the cover as "the editor" didn't effing do the their job. In this case, repeatedly...

Two typos! TWO! (And i'm not yet at the end.) The irony of one of the typos is that they make a point, several times, of correcting one person's spelling of the name "Telsa", and then they writer him/her/itself screws it up just a few pages later, typing "Tesla". They tried to be too clever with the name "Telsa", and tripped right over their own feet.

Aaaarrrgggg!!!

Anyway... if you've got a job as a proofreader, i think i might be a good candidate for you.

Whether ERB actually believed that a stegosaurus could fold its back spines down and use them to glide, we shall likely never know.
