More balcony ruminations…

WILDLIFE

So on return from South Africa last night, the first thing I noticed (within minutes) that from my balcony's vantage point, the entire valley was alive. Full of tihar lights blinking and drink-infused cheering. Kids could be heard chanting “deusure, bhailo” and clapping hands, as the entire valley reverberated… well, like wildlife.

Not compare this to a typical evening in Pretoria SA, where I just spent the past few weeks. The sound was different: almost an eery surface silence punctuated by strange bird calls and the occasional gun shot. Underneath the surface sounds was that low roar of highway traffic from the web of freeways surrounding most all there. Fortunately, most evenings this time of year a massive thunderstorm will roll in and mask the otherwise lifeless night noises of the city. Yet Africa is known for it’s wildlife, not Nepal.

In South Africa, there is a game park very near Johannesburg and Pretoria. There are lions and tigers and everything but bears there. However, there is a selective assortment of African wildfire @ the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, billed “The nearest faraway place” and you just can drive through there (for 1500 rupees per person first please). The lions here all feed from meat pulled from a parked truck - surrounded by a circle of humans watching in cars, as this not-so-wild pride eat slowly. Then there was the cheetah enclosure with a few of those tearing into a bloody side of something with legs. The African Wild Dog enclosure was most active, as the dogs taunted the park rangers as they waited for their food truck to arrive. But watching humans don’t step foot into the lion’s den, or it would be over in an instant (so they say). If you want to touch a lion without dying, then you can go (i did not) to the animal creche where you can play with lion cubs, 300 rupees first please!

All in all, it was a very nice family place, if you are human. Off on the other side of the road, away from carloads of day visitors, the owner of the park has his own little nature reserve. Caged in large enclosures were Siberian Tigers, White Lions, and Hippos in a pond. The whites were lethargic, the siberians weary, and the hippo quite happy actually. I suppose it’s nice for hippos to live in place where their predators are all caged and far away. Better for the Spring Buck and Ostrich as well, as they roamed freely within the outer surrounds, in no fear of being pulled down by a big cat. Yet imported tigers living in cages is no real life for any wildlife.

But back on my dhobighat balcony, my thoughts reassemble and compare the wildlife there, to the wildlife here. Not the type of wildlife found in sanctuaries, zoos or on preserves, but the natural life found when humans live with other types of animals, their dogs and cats and chickens and cows and such. Kathmandu shines here, as the drums rumble and music blares, and the only loud cracks are fireworks thrown about by kids, not the blast of gunfire as heard often in the South African air. We are safe here…

note: special thanks to tour owner Bruce from Transport Tours, Pretoria for spending the day with me showing me around the “Cradle of Humankind.” He is a great guide and is not responsible for the immature situation in the cradle. He is also the one who took these photos, as the camera in my samsung phone sucks. — at Rhino and Lion Park.
