Was There Almost an Ultraverse Relaunch?

COMIC LEGEND:

Steve Englehart was hired to do a pitch on an Ultraverse relaunch at Marvel..

STATUS:

True

A while back, I did a Comic Book Legends Revealed about Marvel’s purchase of Malibu Comics and specifically their Ultraverse line of superhero comic books. That piece was about debunking the legends about why Marvel purchased the Ultraverse.

One thing that I have never been able to state definitively, and something that I doubt I’ll ever be able to state definitively (because I Suspect it is connected to contract terms that would never become public under normal circumstances) is why Marvel has never done a reboot or relaunch of the Ultraverse, despite owning all of these characters. So don’t bother asking about that one for future legends.

However, while Marvel doesn’t look like they’ll ever do a relaunch of a reboot in the future, they actually DID consider doing one in the past! And it was going to be done by one of the original Ultraverse creators, the great Steve Englehart, who created “The Strangers” for the Ultraverse…

And this new project would ALSO be called “The Strangers,” only it wouldn’t be like his original series (which was about a group of strangers who gained powers at the same time on a trolley in San Francisco), but rather a mixture of some of the most notable characters from the Ultraverse.

Englehart explained it on his website:

“Bring back the Ultraverse” was my only directive, but I decided to get at least one character by every Founding Father into the mix.* I used the name THE STRANGERS because it was even more descriptive of this concept than the original one – literally, nobody in the Marvel Universe knew these guys – but it included HARDCASE, CHOICE, MANTRA, PRIME, SLUDGE, RUNE, and LORD PUMPKIN, along with LADY KILLER, THE NIGHT MAN, RHIANNON, and ATOM BOB. With that many characters, and my usual need to give them all character depth, I decided to do what I’d done with the JUSTICE LEAGUE, and asked for a monthly, double-sized book. Marvel was dubious of that idea from the start, maintaining that a double-sized monthly could not be done these days – while I maintained that doing the entire Ultraverse in a regular-sized book could not be done.

But we never resolved that question because they decided not to resurrect the Ultraverse after all. The Ultraverse had been the last successful – and the most successful – character-group launch in comics history, but Marvel decided to follow its own path.

Actor Daniel Wu Rejects Hollywood 'Whitewashing' Claims

Actor Daniel Wu may not be a household name, but he stars in the seriously cool action series Into the Badlands.

Wu was recently asked if, being Asian, he had any opinion about the recent "whitewashing" outrage involving the Netflix series Iron Fist -- which featured a character that was created as a white man -- and the film Ghost in the Shell.

His answer may make some SJWs cry:

Tau: And also the controversy or cultural appropriation issue of how they could have went with an Asian American lead –

Wu: Yeah but you know what, I think that’s people going a little too precocious on that because originally the character was written white -- it wasn’t like it was a whitewashing thing. It’s not like you are talking about a Ghost in the Shell issue, right?

And I still don’t actually buy the Ghost in the Shell whitewashing issue either, and I certainly don’t buy into the cultural appropriation bull because that’s saying [for Iron Fist] that “only Asians are allowed to do martial arts” then that means only black people can play basketball and rap? That means Jeremy Lin shouldn’t be playing basketball? And Eminem shouldn’t be rapping? That’s bull, you know.

So I know Asian Americans are angry, but they should calm down and choose the correct fight in that case -- I agree that Marvel missed the chance of doing something interesting and casting against the race -- they could have done that -- and that would have given them some credit, but they didn’t, so what are you going to do about it? I think the important thing is that everyone learned a lesson from that -- including people that weren’t involved, so I think we just need to move forward, that’s all.

In fairness, casting someone other than a white man might have been an interesting choice for Iron Fist, but I also think casting an Asian in the role wouldn't have been the best alternative. After all, then you've taken a character that rejects the stereotype of "Asian = Martial Arts," and instead continued the cliche. By asking activists what they're going to do about the casting of a white guy to play a white character (THE HORROR!), Wu points out one of the biggest problems with the activists beating this drum: it's a little late to complain. The casting and filming for Season One is over, and based on the mediocre critical reaction to the series, there's not likely to be a Season Two for them to gripe about.

And the truth is that accusations of "cultural appropriation" are as 'racist' as it gets, anyway.

Why were the results of Elvis's autopsy sealed until 2027?

That makes it suspicious.

Just change the word "conspiracy theorists" to researchers.

Even though it is a conspiracy.
