Last week was 'WOMEN's WEEK' at the Arizona Hombu as we celebrated some of our female martial artists. Sensei Paula returned to the dojo and we received new students including Debora, Suzette and Rihanna while two other possible female students watched from the gallery. Two of our students were promoted: Janet was promoted to 9th kyu and Alexis was promoted to 3rd kyu.

This gave me an opportunity to reflect on our female martial artists at the University of Wyoming. We had some petite, but very tough women that included Shihan Sandy, Sensei Donnette, Sensei Katie, Sensei Elena, my daughter Jessica and others. We had so many women in our martial arts classes at the university that at one point, 40% of the club was female - and this was at a time when the university club had about 150 members.

Last week we celebrated our female karate ka at the Arizona School of Traditional Karate on the border of Gilbert with Mesa. Sensei Paula returned after a lengthy absence and we were overjoyed to see her after nearly a year of absence. When the Hombu dojo was moved to Arizona from Wyoming in 2007, she was one of my first Arizona students along with Dai Shihan Neal, and she had already earned a black belt in taekwondo. But Paula wanted to return to her roots, being half Japanese, and began training under the original karate and kobudo system of Shorin-Ryu. Paula even has samurai lineage, so she is also a terror in our samurai arts classes. She currently has a nidan rank in Shorin-Ryu.
