Laid-back locale on the French Broad River, with outdoor seating, local beers & live music.- Google
"The location is nice, next to the French Broad River."
"Local beers on tap and live music are huge pluses."

I went here a handful of times. This past time made me think it'll be the last time I go. The couple times I went it was good fun--games, boyf and tip-based food vendors, and decent mixed drinks actually. But it's called The Bywater for a reason--it's by the river, and people float right up to it when they go tubing. So, a huge group of runners I was a part of, we all decided to go tubing to the bywater and then drink there after a run. And we did. Only, when we got there, they immediately kicked us out. Some of us had to get our IDs from other peoples' cars, and so we offered to put "X's" on our hands to indicate non-drinkers while we got ourselves sorted out, but then they demanded we pay a cover charge immediately if we didn't have IDs. We asked if we could just have time to put our tubes away and grab our things from our cars, and they said no. It was so bad we all relocated entirely and just left. I understand you want to keep underage drinkers out, but seriously you all couldn't wait like 15 minutes for us to get organized as a group after the river? Totally disappointed in the whole experience, the one big attractive novelty of the place was really ruined.

Just a cool, casual, outdoor spot to hang out!

This place is perfection for a certain type of folk. Turns out...I'm one of those folks. One of my first thoughts upon taking in the scene was, "I wish there was something like this by my house!" Made me want to live in Asheville.

I very much like the Bywater, location, drink selection and a family atmosphere that can't be matched. Very unique place. Chad the owner I have known for sometime and he conducts his business in an ethical and socially conscious matter. Highly recommend the Bywater.

I understand policies about IDs but the fact that all I did was walk into the place and watch a friend try and order a drink (non-alcoholic) for me. Little did I know that it against the law to serve someone, who is not even ordering the drink and also, at least 5 feet away from the bar area, an RC cola. I mean I do like the outdoor area but I probably won't be making a trip out of my way to go there. That lady could have a better way of telling me to get off the property. There are kids here and even up on the patio area. If that building is all combined why is that okay? Won't really recommend to guests of mine from the hotel.

The beer selection was great, but the nasty attitude from the female red headed bartender is just ridiculous. I even went back a second time because I had heard so many good things about the place. But she was still a total bitch to both me and my friends! Between the horrid service, the lack of parking and the drunk driving I just don't get what the appeal is! Is stay away and go somewhere friendly.

Best bar in town. Over an acre of river front property. Horseshoes, corn hole, etc. Lots of charcoal grills that you can use. Great community of people that are regulars. And the bartenders definitely take good care. It is a private club, so be prepared to join for 5 bucks if you are not a member already. Last but not least... Canoe/kayak/tube down the French Broad to the Bywater. There's a put in here.
