Great talk. First 30 minutes actually serve as a good introduction to Docker overall. The last 10 focus on the specifics of how Ferry uses Docker and Python for big data stacks like Hadoop and Cassandra.

Summary: Publishing analytics startup Parse.ly has raised $5 million and has released its first report showing the top sources of traffic across its customer base. It claims hundreds of them, including big-name ones like Atlantic Media, Reuters and Mashable.

Yes, we have a feature called "Web-Wide Trends" that tracks how articles are doing across the publisher network. We can't share fine-grained traffic statistics on a per-article basis among publishers because this would be a violation of their privacy. So instead we aggregate up high-level trends like which topics are trending (Benghazi vs. Beirut, to take recent examples). We have some new functionality coming that will address your second point very directly -- producing content that's intrinsically shareable.

Fascinating. My old boss & colleague at Morgan Stanley, +Ben Fried (current CIO of Google) discusses one of the strategy's to Google's engineering productivity. Choice.

"... my mission, writ large, is to make this an incredibly productive organization. A way to do that is through a philosophy of choice. We allow users, within certain constraints, to choose the toolset with which they can be more productive. That produces the best overall environment."

Sounds familiar: this  is how startups operate, too.

+Louis Gray I think you'd enjoy my long-form piece on "Why Startups Die" http://thenextweb.com/entrepreneur/2012/10/03/why-startups-die/ -- it's closely related to your piece from Oct 2010 on startup fail factors.

Pampered Pets is the primary place I use for pet care of all kinds for my now-nearly-2-year-old labradoodle, Kevin. It's an incredible place. He goes to day care there 1-3 days per week, I have lodged him there during business trips, and have used their grooming services and their training services. Lodging & Day Care: my dog is obsessed with their day care. When we get there, he is more excited than I ever see him. When I pick him up, he doesn't want to leave. He plays outside, hangs out in the doggie pools, and plays with tons of dogs. I also know he spends the whole day playing because when he comes home, he is so tired he falls right asleep, and often is even sleepy the next day (in recovery!) I'm convinced sending him to day care here when he was little socialized him to be a good adult dog. Lodging services are also professional and I have never had an issue, and you can combine lodging & day care together so that your dog isn't just sitting around all day while lodged. Grooming: so many of the commercial groomers in town like those at Petco and PetSmart simply don't give my dog a reasonable haircut. They all cut him to look like a traditional poodle, which is a look I hate, even when I implore them otherwise. Pampered Pets always gives him the best haircuts! Training: I have done several training classes with Valerie, their trainer. She's awesome -- teaches positive reinforcement techniques, and training class is a lot of fun for the dogs (and even for the owners). He's better behaved as a result of this.
