Taking Your Work to Bed?

Or cranking 100 hour work weeks?

Interesting premise of the impact of sleep deprivation and decision-making...

Disruption: "Digitally Contestable Markets"

Or how Starbucks, and others, are about to disrupt banking.

Excerpted:

These days, non-banks offer everything from debit cards and checking and savings accounts to money transfers and small business lending. This includes such heavyweights as PayPal, Google, and Walmart, as well as countless smaller companies. PayPal, after all, is a way not only to send money but to store it — and Google Wallet is too. You can even use Google Wallet to send money via Gmail. Meanwhile, Walmart offers Bluebird, a partnership with American Express that’s like a prepaid debit card on growth hormones. It even comes with checking and ATM access.

A friend of mine imagines going back in time 50 years: "There is a guy who has a job driving a robot around on Mars, but everyone's still unhappy."

Banks Sue Target for Negligence

Now this is interesting. .. TWO banks, one credit union. Suing for negligence and... more.

Finally, some serious analysis.

Excerpted:

The banks claim that had a layered security system been in place, the hackers would have had to determine how to deploy their malware and then determine how to get around the antivirus software running on the payment terminals.

"Even if they could have accomplished these feats - which they would not have been able to do - the malware would have been blocked by the firewall or network segmentation when trying to access the Internet," the complaint states. "Had Target taken even the most fundamental layered data security measures, the breach would not have happened."

The financial institutions seek actual and punitive damages for negligence, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract, unjust enrichment and racketeering.

...

Racketeering?

+Jon Henry With the breach entry being a trading partner, I don't quite grasp the racketeering charge either.

Analytics on Job Posters - and Postings

Pretty interesting read, including middle skills, a new term (for me anyway).

Amazon's cloud must be driving the numbers, no?

Ripples in Space-Time?

Looking forward to the announcement today of whatever they've discovered. (Link provided in article.)... Do you think it's the Holy Grail of astrophysics - Einstein's last, as-yet-unproved theory?

Would You Get This Imminent Death Blood Test?

Fascinating, terrifying. Four bio-markers that researchers think reflect you'll die within 5 years.

Who's ready to go get blood drawn? Unfortunately (?), it's not available for most of us yet...

+Jeff Sayre True! I'm wondering if we're moving into a mini ice age. ;) Read about some impact from warming of the Pacific, but I think that we just don't know enough yet.

Email, Anyone?

New leaders and how they introduce themselves... Email.

'Course, I recently witnessed company meetings for CEO intros, accompanied by videotaping...

So what do you think? Are emails enough to convey tone? Lay a foundation for trust? Vision?

I had one commander, I and everyone in his squadron would have gone through hell and worse for.  His day one, he held an assembly.  We jumped to attention and he cracked a joke at how it made him feel.  When we went to the field, he went too, and ate with us, camped out with us, and worked with us...he was an amazing man.  THAT is a leader.
