Subway token suckers

Most people know that Linotype operators, keyliners, and stenographers were made obsolete by changing technology. Here's another occupation that has gone the way of buggy-whip manufacturing:

http://ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com/2013/12/21/the-end-of-sucking-subway-tokens-from-turnstiles/
Imagine putting your mouth on a turnstile. Revolting, right? Thankfully the existence of the Metrocard spelled doom for the practice of token sucking, or "stuff and suck." Yet for decades, it was n...

SC Freiburg

Our four-month-old grandson, Ashford Imboden, shows off his SC Freiburg Schnuller (pacifier), which was a gift from his Uncle Anders (who's working on a master's in environmental governance in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany). Anders is a football, a.k.a. soccer, fan and obviously hopes his addiction will be catching.

(No jokes, please, that "FC Freiburg sucks.")

Slow Train to Switzerland

Diccon Bewes, an Englishman who lives in Bern, has written a delightful book about retracing the trip of MIss Jemima, the Junior United Alpine Club, and Thomas Cook's first Conducted Tour of Switzerland in 1863:

FitBit "UFO Badge"

I just got an e-mail from FitBit that said I'd earned a "UFO Badge" for climbing 14,000 floors in the last 15 months.

I'm not sure how FitBit decided that UFOs cruise at an altitude of 14,000 floors (which translates into 140,000 feet, unless I'm mistaken), but the badge does show how easy it is to get exercise if you live in a walk-up apartment or a multistory house.
