Members in my own family have horrified me on FB. Thanks to FB, I know more things about people and family I'm sure they would never share in a face-to-face setting. One of my biggest issues with returning to FB was privacy. As this article addresses...it does have an uncanny way of knowing things that I never discussed. And I suppose...now I know why and will take measures to guard against such intimate knowledge of my activities. ;)
I've been online since the mid-90's and seen a lot of things come, go, change. Over time, I realized I couldn't continue using the online world which such reckless abandon as I had in the beginning. I used to write as much in my own journals as I did online, but as technology made it easier - less and less in paper journals.
And...as a result...I began to forget that the point of having those is that there are things that are best kept their - my rough draft moments - then to air/vent it all. While people may be fond of citing freedom of speech...I also had to remind myself that I was raised with manners. That while yes, freedom of speech, I don't have to exercise it in a way that has the potential to harm or offend others. While at some point offense will no doubt be taken as opinions rub up against each other...I had started to take on a voice that I didn't particularly care for.
So...re-routing, re-thinking, and slowly moving back into the online realm after my extensive Social Media Detox.
