Disclaimer: I'm not generally impressed by cupcakes. Red Velvet looks and smells beautiful, but the actual cupcakes are just disappointing. We stopped here one evening and, between two of us, split three cupcakes. Each was okay, but just kind of forgettable and bland. Combine that with the horrifying price tag and it's just not worth it. So call me crazy, but I went back a second time. I figured my first impression must have been wrong. I brought six cupcakes to a friend's house and while we all admired how they looked, they were all just... yeah... they're not good. I don't know what the story is. They don't have much taste, they're all look. Perhaps they taste like shortening? Everyone's favorite part of a cupcake is the frosting, of course, and even the frosting is disappointing. Again, it doesn't taste like much. I've yet to find good dessert in the Penn Quarter area, but I can say that even in the absence of good alternatives, I wouldn't bother with a cupcake from Red Velvet if you're walking along with a sweet tooth. It's just not worth the money.

My building had Red Velvet cakey catered for its summer event a few months prior and I was instantly hooked to their seasonal blueberry cupcake. For my program director's birthday, I took charge in getting the sweets. Stopped by to pick up a dozen and opted for one of each flavor. Although the store's signature cupcake is their Southern Belle aka red velvet, I found it at best just average. All their chocolate/cocoa based cupcakes were too dense and somewhat bitter. Their vanilla cupcakes, although moister, were way too buttery. My usual favorite, carrot, tasted like a muffin - dry, dry, dry. I would however give their lemon with coconut icing and hazelnut with espresso icing cupcakes 4 stars. Their lemon cupcake was airy and light. Their hazelnut cupcake had bits of actual hazelnuts which gave each bite a surprising burst of crunch. Although I thoroughly enjoyed their lemon and hazelnut cupcakes, I probably won't be returning any time soon - steep price for an average sized cupcake (same price as crumbs?!) and "McD" service/attitude (the worker never greeted or even looked at me in the eyes. She kept sighing when I took just an extra 10 secs to choose my flavors - there was no one else in line). If there was another cupcake/sweet option in Penn Quarter, Red Velvet Cupcakery would be out of business in no time.

The best red velvet cupcake in town.

Very disappointed I have been trying to make time to go downtown and get a Red Velvet cupcake from what is known to be a good cupcakery in town. I was very disappointed when the sales lady wanted to put my cupcake in a bag, I just paid almost $4 for a cupcake and you want to put in a bag so it can mess up the frosting. Then the cupcake was not to die for, I think the Red Velvet muffin from Wawa was better then that.

As a person with newly-discovered food allergies, I'm still navigating this new diet of mine. I'm a lover of sweets, but being allergic to eggs on top of having a gluten sensitivity makes it a bit challenging to find allergy-friendly baked goods that actually taste good. Red Velvet not only has delicious gluten free, vegan cupcakes, but they have friendly employees, too. I've always had a pleasant experience there and hope to continue enjoying their Black Velvet and White Velvet cupcakes for a long time.

Eh..I bought a dozen and it was $ me I was excited about these and figured it was worth the close to $40...ended up tasting like a betty Crocker cake mix from a box with just some fancy icing. Nothing I couldnt do at home for a total of 1.29. I think what you're really paying for is the cute cardboard boxes and the location. I personally will never go back and drop $40 for cupcakes. Big waste of money. Staff weren't anything to be remembered either.

My first time here I ordered the Peanut Butter Cup. It had crispy edges. I like crispy edges, on a BROWNIE, not on a cupcake. First impressions are everything, so I never went back, particularly since there are so many more places where I've purchased cupcakes without crispy edges. I did like the touch of salt on the peanut butter frosting.
