A landlord has been ordered to pay almost £40,000 in fines and legal costs after he admitted failing to license three houses in multiple occupation. Harishbhai Rambhai Patel pleaded guilty to 12 offences under the Housing Act 2004. Leicester magistrates fined

Mr Patel £10,000 for each of the three houses he had failed to license.

In addition, he was also fined £500 for failing to produce the necessary documents, a further £4,000 for eight breaches of the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006.

The landlord has since carried out the repairs to bring one of the three properties up to the right standard, and the city council is in the course of dealing with his application to license the houses.
