St. Augustine's life is one of the greatest sinner-to-saint stories in the history of the Church. His #feastday is celebrated on August 28th, the day after that of his holy mother, St. Monica, who won his soul for heaven through her persistent prayer.
St. Augustine is one of the most influential doctors of the Catholic Church. He was born in the Roman province of Numidia, North Africa in 354. Born of a pagan father and a Christian mother, St. Monica, his early education was that of a young pagan gentleman. St. Augustine's infamous life

Today is the #feastday of St. Monica, patron saint of mothers, housewives, and widows. She prayed without fail for her son, a great sinner, to become a Catholic Christian. A holy bishop told her, "The child of those tears shall never perish." Many years later her son not only converted, but became a bishop and one of the most important theologians of the Catholic Church. Her son was the great St. Augustine of Hippo. St. Monica is an example to all mothers to persevere and never give up praying for the conversion of their children. She is also the patron saint against alcoholism, victims of adultery and abuse, difficult marriages, and disappointing children. Early in life she struggled with alcohol, and was given in marriage to an adulterous, abusive pagan man. Through fervent prayer and patience St. Monica also won the conversion of her wayward husband. St. Monica, pray for us!

August 26th is the #feastday of Our Lady of Częstochowa, a revered icon of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus said to be one of those painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. Also known as the "Black Madonna", the icon is painted on wood, according to tradition the very wood of the Holy Family's table built by Jesus himself.

This icon of Our Lady has a special place of honor as the heart of the Catholic faith in Poland for at least the last 600 years. The two slashes on Our Lady's face, and a scar from an arrow to the throat, sustained in the 15th century from separate attacks by enemy invaders, has given hope of the Blessed Mother's protection of the Polish people, and comfort to their sorrows, throughout centuries of devastating invasions to their country.

The icon is venerated at Jasna Gora Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland. In 1656 King Casimir declared Our Lady of Częstochowa "Queen of Poland" and made the city the spiritual capital of the nation, now the third-largest Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. Our Lady of Częstochowa, pray for us!

Please continue to pray for the recovery and relief efforts for yesterday's 6.2-magnitude #ItalyEarthquake. The death toll has now risen to 250, and aftershocks are still being felt as workers search rubble for trapped victims.
Rescuers are combing through mountains of rubble in central Italy in hopes of finding more survivors after a devastating quake that has claimed 250 lives.

Today is the #feastday of St. Augustine—the day following the feast of his mother, St. Monica, who prayed earnestly for his conversion to Christianity. St. Augustine is perhaps the greatest sinner-turned-saint story in Church history. His former wayward life paired with his dramatic conversion, and profound theological influence on the Catholic Church, is testament to God's glory. St. Augustine beautifully wrote a prayer in his 'Confessions' after his conversion, “Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you!" St. Augustine, pray for us!

We all know that "patience is a virtue," and yet we also know how hard it is to practice. St. Monica, who prayed for her son's conversion for seventeen years, certainly knew what it felt like to wait for God's timing. She is the perfect patron saint for those struggling with patience. #FeastDay

Patience is something I pray for constantly. And it's one of the things I mention in the confessional just as often. I have this vision in my head of what patience is supposed to look like: a mother with a soft expression, gently speaking to her child who has just done something wrong; calmly r
