Mercury Distribution Account Sales Manager Nelio de Freitas will soon be flying out to Tanzania as part of the Jersey Overseas Aid Community Work Project 2018 in partnership with Raleigh International.

Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world, where just one in six of the population have access to safe and clean sanitation facilities. With water contamination prevalent, cholera outbreaks and diarrhoea transmission are common. Simple handwashing with soap can make a huge difference, yet 84% of Tanzania's schools do not have functional handwashing facilities.

In rural Morogoro District alone, sanitation and hygiene facilities such as gender-specific latrines and handwashing stations are almost entirely absent from Primary Schools.

The overall purpose of the JOA and Raleigh International project is build the water and sanitation infrastructure (latrines and washrooms) for a primary school, providing safe and sustainable water sanitation and hygiene facilities for 1800 children in the region of Morogoro region of Tanzania.

As a JOA Community Work Project Volunteer, Nelio will be working alongside project partners including the Kilombero District Council and staff from the Department of Work and Education to help deliver the construction of new school sanitation blocks including hand washing facilities. They also aim to setup SWASH clubs (Schools Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) which help raise awareness of safe hygiene behaviours.

The project runs from 30th June to 25th July. Mercury are delighted to have had the opportunity to sponsor Nelio on this very important and rewarding project and we wish him and all the other team volunteers the very best of luck. Updates to follow.

As part of the 'Meet The Team' series, we visit the Mercury Warehouse. Our warehouse team are always kept busy throughout the year. Led by John, the warehouse team takes on all the necessary tasks to get the job done, whatever the demand. It can be particularly demanding during the busy summer season with what appears to be a never ending stream of deliveries coming in and going out.

Together, the warehouse team is a strong unit that ensures the order you place is picked and packed correctly and delivered on time.
