Please check out my latest blog post, "In the Aftermath of the Elliot Rodger Tragedy, Society is Still Ignoring the Real Causes of Youth Violence". It can’t be stated any clearer: Until we as a society address and remedy the neglectful, abusive and inhumane ways that our society treats children, violent tragedies will continue as the most disturbed of these children lash out their pain on society. How many more tragedies will it take before our society addresses the real causes of violence? http://www.laurieacouture.com/2014/06/in-the-aftermath-of-the-elliot-rodger-tragedy-society-is-still-ignoring-the-real-causes-of-youth-violence/

"Most children do not want to go to a place where every joy about being a child is controlled, banned or used as a reward or punishment. They don’t want to go to a place where their basic physical and emotional needs, such as food, hydration, elimination, physical activity, play, rest, sleep, comfort, affection and attention, are at the mercy of the people controlling them." http://www.laurieacouture.com/2013/10/if-school-were-relevant-it-wouldnt-be-compulsory/

So grateful every day that I unschooled my brilliant, creative, free-spirited son and that we proudly do not watch TV or play home video games!

Visit my blog and check out my latest post, Part III of "The Gender Politics of Toys", this time discussing the upcoming "Lammily" doll, which at first glance looks like a great idea. But can you tell what is missing? http://www.laurieacouture.com/2014/03/the-gender-politics-of-toys-part-iii-the-lammily-average-is-beautiful-doll/

"Children grow weary of years and years of being in a box that stifles their innate creative passions, interests and unique ways of learning. Children struggle to learn in environments that are increasingly developmentally inappropriate, hostile and stressful the older that they grow. Kinesthetic learners, especially boys, are especially agonized by being forced to sit sedentary for hours in chairs doing mindless busywork that bears no relevance to their way of exploring and interacting with the world." http://www.laurieacouture.com/2013/10/if-school-were-relevant-it-wouldnt-be-compulsory/

"In a democracy, holding someone hostage, subjecting them to unpaid work and denying them the right to meet their basic needs is a human rights violation. However, since the 1850′s we have been subjecting children to these conditions daily, calling it “education”." http://www.laurieacouture.com/2013/10/if-school-were-relevant-it-wouldnt-be-compulsory/

If you have children who play with toys, my latest post is for you. Gender polarizations hurts both boys and girls and takes away their right to play freely, as they wish. Toy companies that used to focus on toys that boys love are experiencing tremendous pressure from various organizations and groups to focus on girls. However, companies that are solely focused on girls are not experiencing any pressure or criticism to focus on boys. Why? Because it is acceptable in our culture today to champion girls while ignoring boys. American Girl says they have a passion for girls. What company has a passion for boys? None. What company would dare say they had a passion for boys even if they did? None. http://www.laurieacouture.com/2014/01/the-gender-politics-of-toys-part-ii-shunning-boys-and-turning-lego-pink/
