If you've ever wanted to be a trained storm spotter here in Johnson County KS, the training schedule has been posted online. You need to be 18 or older and have a Technician Class or higher Amateur Radio licence from the FCC (relatively easy to get), take a few online tests and attend some training events over the next 2 months.

Johnson County Emergency Management, like many other EM offices, requires all volunteer spotters to be ham radio operators, because it's the most reliable way to keep in touch with all the spotters in the field. Additional training ensures that you know enough about weather to describe what's happening, understand the lexicon and hierarchy used by emergency management groups, and qualify for duty. It's an exciting group to be a part of!
